How do I get the top part of the handgaurd off my SAR-1?

I know how it is supposed to come off but I have net been able to get it off. The lever may not be moving far enough but I think it is. I think the piece is jammed in there or something. Is there a trick? Has anyone else had problems removing the top handgaurd?

Thanks.

Ok...stupid question; but you do have the bolt carrier/piston assembly removed right?

I only ask because I had a customer try to remove the upper handguard on a SA-85 once upon a time and that's the part he forgot to do.

No trick. It can suck the first time. I have had to pry the lever up with a screw driver before. That might work for you. I actually took a little bit of the metal off with a file after I got it off the first time.

The last time I had trouble getting one off it turned out I did not have the lever far enough forward.
Try tapping it (the lever) with a plastic or brass faced tapper hammer if you have one.

Just to warn you: You will most likely scratch the finish of your rifle moving the lever for the first time.

Just push/pull/lightly hammer it or whatever you need to do to rotate it (it should go such that the arm is above the body of the sight block, and able to swing freely, then the gas tube will come free when properly aligned). You want to align the flat part of the rotating cylinder with the rear of the gas tube and just yank upwards on the rear of the upper handguard/gas tube assembly to remove it.

Having the bolt carrier installed would be detrimental to this operation. :D

At the very least it would cause you to need a bigger hammer.;)

linx310.nothingbutguns.com has a lot of great stuff. Step-by-step instructions for pretty much anything you'd want to do (legally) with an SAR-1.

Use the extractor groove from a cartridge case to gain a purchase.

The lever has to be in a particular position, not necessarily straight up.

NO!:banghead: I didn't know this is what you had to do to remove it.:o Thanks! I guess its common knowledge but I never bothered to take off the hand gaurd because I couldn't seem to budge it and I didn't want to force anything so I just tugged at it a few times and gave up.

It wasn't a stupid question, it was a stupid AK owner (me:) ). What do expect out of someone that would own an AK?:D

Ah. See it's not common knowledge that the AK type design is unusually complicated in operation and requires specialized training to properly operate and maintain.

I mean, seriously, if the AK was easy to operate and maintain in adverse conditions, they'd give them out like candy to every third-world, poorly trained, ill-equipped, conscript soldier in every bush war.... uhm.

Never mind.

..And if this scratch bothers you, then you bought the wrong freaking gun!
