Ultimate "wish" rifle thread---Gov't buys YOU one
Sir Galahad

Ok, this will be even harder to get our minds around than entertaining thoughts of a nuclear war, only because a nuclear war seems more realistic. But, it'll be fun. (This thread, not a nuclear war.)
Assume a President finally gets elected who decides that an armed citizenry is the best deterrant to terrorism. Assume a Congress and Senate is elected that will agree. And assume that this becomes a "national defense" issue, so state "assault weapons" bans are not valid for this rifle. The government passes a measure that says YOU, John or Jane Q. Citizen, will be given a voucher with which you can purchase ANY currently made or refurbished, new-in-box or refurb-in-box, semi-auto firearm in .223 or .308 only. (Why .223 or .308 only?!? Because I wanted to be dfficult, that's why, LOL! Seriously, though, for caliber uniformity as per armed militia requirements.) You give the voucher to your gun shop, they get you the rifle and the voucher is turned in to the government for payment. Plus, you get free ammo if you come practice at National Guard ranges. The rifle is yours to keep with no strings attached. So, what's your choice?
I'm picking a FAL.

Oh, and with the rifle comes a free 20 full-capacity magazines and 1,000 rounds of ball ammo. And you can purchase more full-cap mags anytime you like for it.

but changing my answer
Given the apparent intent of the act in question -- securing the homefront from random violence from nutjobs... surplused M4/M16 fits the bill the best I think.

Why isn't this actually happening RIGHT NOW!?!?! :banghead:
The 16" Bushmaster A3 carbine that I have my eye on right now anyway. I know it's short on range because of the shorter barrel and not in a *clears throat* manly man-sized round but I figure if I'm going to be fighting in the city it'll probably be short range anyway. My $2*10^-2...

You know, let's say that the average price spent goes around $900. And let's say that "only" 5 million Americans bite on this deal. How much money is that compared to what we're spending for Tom Ridge's Bake-Sale-With-An-Attitude Shmomeland Depends. I bet ol' Ridge has already socked away more cash than that. "Ahhem, yes, well, the federal government has developed contingency plans in case all federal reserve notes, that is, cash paper money, suddenly bursts into flames tomorrow due to an evil terrorist plot. This emergency Homeland Security cash, called "HoSecCash", no rude jokes, please, is safely held in my Swiss bank, er, in an undisclosed location." I say free rifles and full 50 CCW 24/7 is a lot less expensive. Think about it! "Die you American sc-"BAM BAM! "Did you say something? Oh, yes, that's a nice boxcutter, but, thanks, I already have a weapon. Oh, I'm sorry, it's hard to understand you above your sucking chest wound."

Any of the following (since beggars can't be choosers):
M-1C - cuz they're hard to get and expensive
M1903 w/Unertl 8x scope (USMC sniping rifle)
M1903A4 (with Weaver 330 or substitute)
M1903 w/Warner Swazey
M1903 periscope rifle
Dwight Eisenhower Presentation Model M-14 (it looks like sporter with that high gloss blue finish, burl wood)
Garand #1
DARN! You limited it to currently made guns. I like those too, but I want the rare and exotic museum pieces. :) OK, for modern (drumroll) 7.62 mm Nato:
SR-25. It's the Remington 5R bbl, AR type action with its greater consistency over the M-14 that I like. Give me a Leupold MK 4 No. 1 with mil dots (and illuminate reticle) along with a Remington NVD adapter.
Thanks for the fun question.

In that case...
I'd like a National match grade m-14 in M-21 (I think thats the code) sniper configuration. To go, please.
And if I can't have that, an honest to goodness Colt M4 or AR 15 A2-HB would be lovely.

Can I let them keep the cash, and instead I take a WELL USED weapon off their hands? If so, I'd take my old M-4. She's reliable and I know every inch of her like a lover. Good 'ole Norma Jean, COLT M-4 Carbine, serial number W016312. She's already served me well in combat and I'd trust her to do it again.
If the .gov wouldn't be so kind, I'd settle for one of her less glamorous cousins, a semi- only M-4gery.

decisions, decisions....
I'll risk being called a snob and choose a SIG 55x. Uncle's choice. I like them all. If it is a US homegrown-only sort of deal, that's fine too. I'll be happy to be presented with one of those fine, fine M14's waiting in armory racks just for me. Once again, Uncle may select for me. I'll trust him just this once.

Since you’re going to let me spend the governments money (I guess that’s really “our money”) I’ll try not to waste it. I’d have to pick the Springfield Armory M25 “White Feather” and top it off with the Schmidt & Bender 4-16 X 50 P/M II. I’m fat and out of shape and would prefer to wreak havoc from long distances.:D

I got my very own Sako M95 waiting at the depot for the whistle to blow (with my very own TOW launcher as well)... in a few years I'll be re-posted, though, so then it'll be a M62 with any luck and an East German or Chinese AK clone without any. Then I'll be better off with my own Saiga M3...

What kind of collectivist hive-mind scheme is this? The gummint buying you a rifle means they are paying for it with money they STOLE from the rest of us. The number of high-dollar rifles listed here only confirms my long held suspicions that this place is infested with leftist parasite sleepers.
For those of you who are humor-impaired, the above is a joke. Unbunch your knickers.

September 5, 2003, 10:25 AM
Yes, I do; because on this board it is very stoutly maintained that welfare is bad. All the conservatives, libertarians, and Randroids never tire of pointing out that any money the government spends is money that was extorted from somebody else. Your thread was started as a bit of whimsy, I'm well aware. I simply find it humorous that the same folks who consider foodstamps to be an abomination would be happy to have the government spend that exact same extorted money purchasing them high-dollar rifles.

Thankfully, this particular bit of whimsy ain't terribly expensive.. as whimsy.
In all seriousness though, I do think one of the few gov't GOOD ideas they ever had was the DCM. I can't imagine the Pentagon coming out anywhere but ahead were they to sell of their old M16A1s and M14s to finance their new rifle projects and whatnot. Beats sending the dated stuff overseas or worse yet.. to the crusher. :(

this becomes a "national defense" issue, so state "assault weapons" bans are not valid for this rifle. If the NFA is still in effect, I'd start looking at those nice "LEO/Govt. only" ARs and find one that talks to me.
If the NFA is void for this, where do I buy an M-16, baby? :D

Though I am young and my lungs are good, I am out of shape and extremely so. So the two things I could do are:
1. Provide supressive fire.
2. Snipe.
Since it's semi-only, number one is out.
That means I'll take a modified PSG-1:
http://tedandtom.keenspace.com/images/psgcamo.jpg
Iron sights in case the scope breaks, and interchangable camouflage sets for various localities. I just did Desert cam because that's my favorite type :).
I guess that's it. But if we could have anything, then of course I would have a vehicle mounted ma deuce. Maybe a few other things.
Before anyone asks, if you couldn't tell, yes, it's a PhotoChop.

AR10 all the way. That would also prevent me from saving my pennies like I am doing now to get one. The muscle memory should be close the M-16 I trained with, but in a decidedly more manly caliber!;)
Chris Rhines
September 6, 2003, 10:41 AM
First, I'd tear up the voucher.
Then I'd open up my wallet and order an Armalite AR10 flattop, twenty 20-round mags, and a few cases of good commercial .308 ball.
The AR-10 would get a few modifications (ambi safety and mag catch, right-side reciprocating charging handle, maybe a lightweight float tube) and a good scope (A U.S. Optics SN-4 with 1000-yard BDC would be perfect, but I doubt I could afford it. A Leupold Vari-XIII 1.5-5x circle dot, or an IOR M2 4x24 would be my next choice.)
Next stop is the range.

We need to move away from the .223 mosquito biter and adopt the true one-shot killer.....308 Win. (7.62 x 51).
Anyone that has owned or fired the FN-FAL will understand. Weak side charging handle so you can hold it in the right hand, low profile for shooting from cover, scope mounts over bolt cover (replaces bolt cover), scope can be quickly removed and the military sights are there. Break open and slide out the old bolt assembly, maintenance is a dream. Never had a misfire or jam...ever. I have several, and they are all good. The M16/AR15 and clones are mattel toys.
Fire a 20 round magazine and you will truly be impressed with the amount of firepower. Recoil is minimal due to the adjustable gas system and it stays on target.

I simply find it humorous that the same folks who consider foodstamps to be an abomination would be happy to have the government spend that exact same extorted money purchasing them high-dollar rifles.
So I'll take one of the M14s sitting in inventory, paid for with my parents' money (in other age groups, it was your money, or your grandparents' money). I'll pay for the NM work myself, if none of those are stored. I'll read old THR threads about the optics I'll need (I'm over 40). If I become convinced that it's the right thing to do, I'll pay for the whole rifle myself.
In return, I require that our government stop buying weapons for other countries and that it decrease our taxes by the amount of those costs.
I require that all firearms laws other than the 2d Amendment be repealed, so that weapons prices float to a level that reflects the cost of their manufacture and whatever profit that the manufacturers and dealers may be able to convince people to pay.
Finally, (recognizing the thin ice under my feet and understanding that someone here may soon convince me that the following statement is idiotic) I insist that private citizens be permitted to send monetary aid to whichever countries we personally support, with the proviso that those who support our real, self-proclaimed enemies be treated as the traitors they are.
Think it'll pass?
