I'm arguing with a liberal and he doesn't believe that a great majority of gun crimes are committed by prior offenders, who are legally prohibited from owning or carrying weapons.

Does anyone have a good source for the percent of gun crime that is committed by felons? I'm guessing it's over 80%.

Thanks

Maybe in the FBI Uniform Crime Statistics.

I find it hard to believe that you'd actually think that a felon would even try to obtain a firearm since it's so obviously illegal for them to possess one. :uhoh: Don't we all know that felons ALWAYS obey the law, and it's just society picking on them that gets them in trouble. :what: :cuss:

What a sarcastic old coot!

These were clipped from here. (http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/pub/pdf/ffro.pdf)

Among nonviolent Federal offenders, those involved
with firearms had more extensive criminal histories
More than 70% of violent Federal offenders had been
sentenced in the past, regardless of firearms involvement.
Excluding minor infractions, 76% of property offenders
and 61% of drug offenders with firearms involvement
compared to 38% and 48%, respectively, without such involvement
had been previously sentenced as an adult.
70% of offenders whose current case involved firearms
and 45% of offenders whose offense involved no firearm
had been sentenced in the past for at least one offense.

Even if you show him the stat, he still won't believe it. Invite him to the range and build some camaraderie.

+1 on that idea.Stats won't do it.The joy of shooting may do it.Perhaps nothing will do it.
Try Jake's suggestion.

You can't engage an unarmed opponent in a battle of wits. He's going to believe what he wants to believe.
