I just bought a few boxes of WSPs and noticed that they said for standard AND magnum pistol loads. Did I get some sort of in between primer or are all of the Winchester primers getting away from having two kinds of primers (standard and magnum) in each size?

No, you have the standard W-W LR primer. Winchester has been marking their LR primer boxes that way for many years. :)

Winchester site says
WARNING - Primers may explode if subjected to impact, shock, or intense heat. Store in original factory container only. Primers in bulk are capable of mass explosion. Do not use primer feed devices for reloading.

HUH? How are you supposed to load them?

MISTAKE!!!!! It is the Winchester large pistol primers that serve dual purpose as standard and magnum, been that way since before the did away with their numbering system. The Large Rifle primers come in standard and magnum. Winchester primers feed in every priming tool I have, 5 different ones.

No you still have magnum specific primers or after a second look at least in small pistol

WSP for the std loads

and then the WSPM for magnum loads

In small pistol winchester has standard and magnum primers. Large pistol primers are universal.

If you look at my link above, then at the primer # , i would take this as meaning they are the exact same primer ,std & mag. Or could the webpage be a type O ? I sent an email to Win. , if i get a reply i will post it here.

Maybe the new winchester primers are for both like their large pistol have been for years.

Email answer from Winchester Thank you very much for taking the time to contact us here at Winchester Ammunition. We are always glad to hear from our many friends and customers who share in the shooting sport.

WSP is a Small Pistol Primer. WSPM is a Small MAGNUM Pistol primer. They are not the same.

I'm glad you posted Winchester's response, but...

That doesn't explain why both Luke and Bushmaster have boxes that are marked DIFFERENTLY than the normal WSP and WSPM primers to which Winchester refers.

Luke G and The Bushmaster - On your boxes of WSP's marked std or magnum is the "WSP" printed in white or red?

243winxb - The response from Winchester, though fast, was not helpful. You might want to reply to that email and ask them again about the boxes of WSP's specifically marked for both std and mag.

I am not real sure of this but, I believe the referance is to the fact they can be used in both types of cartridge std and mag depending on the powder used, not the load. There is referance to both types of primer depending on the powder used in most manuals. One doesn`t need a mag primer to load Unique in the 357 or 44 mag as example. The mag primers are specified though for powders like H110 or 2400 in some cases.

Winchester has done this before. About 20 years ago I stocked up on Winchester Large Rifle primers. They were marked "for standard and magnum". They worked good in everything I was loading from 243 to 375 H&H. A couple years ago I finally ran out and mail ordered what I thought was the same thing. Winchester had changed sometime in the interim and now market two different large rifle primers, standard and magnum.
I liked the old ones better.

sent 2nd email. I use magnum primers in 38 special & 357 Mag. no problems, accuracy is ok for bullseye competiton (38 spec.). From Bullseye to Alliant 2400 just workup the load using the magnum primer.

It says this because is works for both standard and most magnum loads. The WSPM magnum small pistol primer is only for certain magnum pistol loads. In either case you should consult your reloading manual and use the primer that they recommend for best results.
