Hi all... first anyone have a video or detailed FAQ with images on how to clean a Glock 9mm properly? There was one on the web but it seems to have been deleted. A gunsmith showed me how to, but I forgot some bits, and also I want to make sure I dont have to deal with the special springs some guns are said to have and any other "special" considerations.

Also, there seems to be man varying thoughts on how often to clean... I understand it will depend on usage and what you have it for, but a machine is still a machine, so what are the real considerations? Is it really more important to clean PER # of rounds, like 500-1000 seems to be the common number, or.... is it more important per time period if you dont shoot often because the oils etc., get built up and more viscous?

I would like to know the general theory on that, but for now, in case you do need to know my habits, I would say I will go to the range about once a month (would like to go more often but... ya....) for about 100 rounds or so, and thats it. Thanks!

I had a really good response but some idiot at work deleted it for me. Go here, bottom of page, for info. http://www.lifelibertyetc.com/RangeBag.aspx

Very nice, thank you.

Couple more things....

I guess for this Glock, the makeup from a 22 and a 9mm are the same, just different chamber/mag size?

Does the Glock EVER need to be fully disassembled and cleaned by all components? I heard some people say Glocks can be functional without ever cleaning it, which is not what I plan on doing, but then I would at least think that cleaning it would just involve putting a drop of oil on the 4 rails, rubbing a thin layer on the chamber, and a drop near the trigger part. I guess if I had some time to kill and nothing better to do I can take it fully apart and clean each component? But then how would I know what places I would need to add a little oil or not? Wouldnt it be bad to dry out certain key components that need oil or add excessive oil and and encourage buildup of dust, etc...

Get some Gun Scrubber spray (polymer safe type), spray out the crud, relube per manual. The only spring you should have to touch is the recoil spring. Unless you are doing a combat tour the Glock should not need anything other than a field strip.
Ptooma Productions prints the Glock reference guide, which is a really good book.

^^^ +1

You really don't need to do more than field strip a Glock to do routine cleaning. Gun Scrubber does a great job blasting out all the gunk in the frame and slide. I'd then go to town w/ a toothbrush and Breakfree CLP to clean/lube. Wipe away excess w/ patches and Q-tips. Done.

NO OIL ON THE CHAMBER, unless you are talking about the outside of it. G 22, 40 cal and G17 are same dimensions on the grip frame. Slide has different diameter hole for barrel. All internal parts except extractor and ejector, recoil spring are the same. Mags for 40 can actually work for 9mm, but not 100%. Oil rails, barrel when it contacts the slide at the front, and the trigger bar where it sticks up to depress the firing pin disconnect. ONLY LIGHTLY there as any excess can gum up the FP disconnector making trigger pull horrible. Maybe some oil on the trigger spring also. They seem to rust and corrode easily. Watch the video it covers everything you need to know except for doing an easy trigger job. Trigger job info here, http://www.alpharubicon.com/mrpoyz/glock/ also more pics for assembly/reassembly. If not doing a trigger job its also an easy way to take down, clean it, dry it up from excess oil and reassemble. Glocks are easy 1000 rnds plus if using factory, non Wolf ammo. The primer sealer seems to get loose and gum up the firing pin channel after 500+ rounds. Got my one Glock up to about 4000 rounds of Wolf and 1000's more factory ammo and have yet to clean out the firing pin channel. Only recently dipped the frame into cleaner to clean out the trigger parts. For reference the 40 cals can be made into 9mm with new ejector, extractor and barrel. But because of different barrel diameters the 9mm cannot be made to go 40.
