I came across some .44 mag cases today. The majority looked pretty good while a few of them looked pretty "crusty" with a reddish brown tint. I dumped into the tumbler this afternoon for about 3 hrs and when I took them out the reddish brown tint was replaced with a darker brown and full of small pits. Is this the result of weathering for so long the zinc (I think) is breaking down???.

You are correct. It is the leaching of the zinc from the brass alloy. In a big round like .44 magnum is it worth it to use some chemically weakened cases? Toss 'em in the scrap bucket!

I figured as much. It's not too bad though. Out of the 312 I picked up only 8 were were bad.
