Here is a letter to the editor that I just submitted to the local newspaper.

***

There are four basic rules of firearms safety. One: always treat all guns as if they are loaded. The only time you can ever be sure a gun is unloaded is if you are personally holding it and have visually inspected the chamber and removed the magazine. Two: always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. Never let the muzzle point at anything that you would not want to shoot. Three: keep your finger off the trigger and outside the trigger guard until the moment when you are ready to shoot. Four: always be certain of your target and moreover, be sure you know exactly what is behind it. Remember these rules, and you will always shoot safely.

Now, the next time you watch a movie, try and see if the characters in it are following any of these rules. In all likelihood, they are not. Every Hollywood action movie is full of gun safety violations of the most egregious sort. Specifically, people thoughtlessly waving guns around all over the place, with their fingers on the trigger. The same celebrities who are anti-gun make millions portraying characters who not only use guns but demonstrate horrible safety and shooting form.

I don't know where you live, but in my neck of the woods, the editor'd be as likely to publish a sensible observation like that as a letter from a junkie advocating the safe use of opiates. Nice argument though.

And just to reinforce your point, here's a pic of Brad Pitt breaking all four rules at once:

1. The gun is loaded.
2. The gun is not pointing in a sfe direction, it's in Ed Norton's mouth.
3. Finger IS on trigger.
4. I doubt he checked the area directed behind Nortons head; someone could get hurt!

Well written, but you must not have including one or more paragraphs. Where is the part that explains why anybody should care if celebrities who make big bucks and show improper handling skills are also anti-gun?

The only people that are going to get the point as it is are those, like folks here, are those who already know and agree with the point.

I've written pro-gun articles to this paper before and they always published them. The editor knows me and likes my articles.

I would have elaborated more but there was a 200 word limit.
