The foreend wood on the second one looks very promising. But one Marlin in 45-70 is enough. There just isn't space for another in the safe (or for another safe).

You may find this hard to understand, but this is the 3rd Marlin 1895 I will have owned. I have had both a straight stocked and pistol gripped model, and have fired a total of of 50 rounds from both. And both have been sold/traded.

I also own a slew of single shots, a Kodiak double gun in 45/70, and a Summit Carbine bolt gun a la the English Enfield action. Have loved and been shooting the caliber since about 1976 (dates me, doesn't it?).

I honestly hope that I will learn to love and keep this current iteration of the Marlin 1895. It certainly will be the shortest and most handy one I have owned.

If any of you are wonderng what is my favorite 45/70? Well, I'm kinda partial to my original 1878 Sharps Borschordt, which I picked up in 1986 at the Pomona Gun Show for $425.00. It has a 32 inch bull barrel, a non-windage adjustable Sharps tang sight, very plain wood, and weighs around 10 pounds. It also outshoots my Browning 1885 Target Gun with just about anything I want to load!

Thanks everyone for responding to this post. I just wanted to share my good fortune with fellow enthusiasts.

I'd like to hear more about that Summit from Gibbs. Fit, finish, accuracy, overall quality? I love my 1895G and I'm a big fan of the Enfield. I figure it ought to be a decent rifle.
