Forgive me for asking, but, when talking about pre-lock S&W, what does this mean.

A pre lock S&W is a gun produced with out an internal lock built into the gun, next to the cylinder release. It looks like a hole in the side of the gun:barf:

Also, I believe S&W started the locks around 1998 or so.

The internal lock system made its infamous debut in 2001. Every S&W revolver since then, save a few special runs and the Model 40, have had the ILS.
