M855 and the Old Minis

Hey all:

I have rejoined the Mini-14 crowd after too many years in the AR group :D:D:D. I picked up a Mini-14 that has the older 1/10" twist rate. Before I rid myself of the AR, however, I am flush with non-loaded M855 bullets and 64gr. Power Points.

I researched my rear off, only to have a TON of results regarding heavier bullets in Minis, but only for the new 1/9s or the newish 1/7s. Nothing regarding the 1/10.

I pose to the THR community:

Has anyone ran M855 or under 70 grain bullets in a 1/10 (I DONT CARE IF YOU HAVE A 1/9 or 1/7 :D) with good results? Or am I remissed to a hellish world of selling components online to fund purchase of 55grs?

I know from experience that the 1 in 12 twist barrels will not stabilize the 62 grain M855 projectiles.

1 in 10 would be an interesting experiment.
I did not know that the Mini 14s were 1 in 10.. I need to get out more...

How would you tell if they shot bad or not from an old Mini 14? All the mini's I've seen shoot like crap with the best ammo and U.S. made LC and WCC M855 has never had a good reputation for accuracy pre-ATK takeover of Lake City.

Load some and shoot at 100 yards. If they don't keyhole you're golden. If they hold a group smaller than 10" you're walking with the Gods.

My 580 series mini seems to shoot okay. Here is a target shot at 50 yards with a very hot barrel. The one flyer was called. It was my third shot. My sights were also adjusted a little high. I was holding on the first ring under the bullseye. This was with open sights also.

Your 580 also has 1/9 twist, but the group looks pretty nice.

I have a 181, with 1/10 twist and it shoots the 62 grain stuff just fine. I haven't shot it for accuracy yet, just plinking. I plan on loading up some 68 grain BTHP for it and see what it will do with those, btw all it has is an accu-strut.

My 181-series AC556F has 1/12 twist and does NOT like anything heavier than 55's... So, it eats a steady diet of M193 and I save the 855's for the AR's...
