I only plink with 7.62x39... the 5.56 stuff is too outrageous price-wise. The 7.62 stuff is almost half the price of 5.56... ouch

Reloads using the cheapest 55gr fmj I can find and h335 since it meters so well.

xm193.

I suspect that will change once I start reloading.

It will still be my SHTF stash, though.

Whatever .223 55gr or 62gr is cheap and available at the time. Usually UMC or American Eagle, sometimes PMC, sometimes Prvi...

55 grain fmj reloads or Black Hills SBHP (55 gr), as my CZ carbine has a slower twist and doesn't like the 62 gr stuff. BUT as it's a bolt-gun..., I don't worry too much about ammo price as you fellers with your new fangled, gas operated, air cooled, auto-loading, ammo burners.

I'm a cheapskate..., what else can I say? :neener:

I don't have a 5.56mm rifle, so I don't use mil-spec ammo. I practice with the same bullets I use for Coyotes. That way my scope stays zeroed. 55 grain Nosler Ballistic-Tips and Alliant RL-10x powder with small rifle magnum primers at 3250 fps at ten feet out the muzzle of my 22" barrelled .223 Ruger Model 77 Mark II Sporter topped with a 6-24x44mm Burris Signature Select. At 20x I shoot flies that land on my target cardboard. Currently I only benchrest shoot, but plan to try shooting stix soon. Unsupported standing shots I'll never again be good at because I've become too shaky. cliffy

For my AR, I keep a wide variety. I have assorted surplus 55 grain for plinking, some of the brass isn't pretty, but it was cheap and it functions. I also have a crapload of PMC 223A- I like that stuff, a lot. Accurate, reliable, affordable- everything good.

I have some soft points if I was ever going to medium game hunt with my rifle.

I also have some Remington and Federal 45 grain hollow points and SS109.

I would not hesitate to use any of the ammo for SD if need be (except the cheapo surplus).

I load my own.

Generally I like the 55 grain Hornady FMJ for plinking, but I will use either Vmax or the spsx bullets for prairie dogs.

I've been finding .223 from S&B fairly inexpensive and there's always the monarch (which I understand to be privi partisan) that Academy carries for a fairly good price.

Oh, I just reload the surplus brass with surplus 55gr bullets and use 2230C to get fairly close to the factory round.

No, it's not "performance tuned" but 2 moa will do for my plinking.
