Recently, some friends returned from Alaska. They know of my modest collection and added to it with this Ulu. It is obviously custom work, made in a town known as "China". Note that the handle is made of "Cultured Moose Antler" which I assume is hard to come by. Also, note the display case/sheath. Good friends are a treasure...

Well, at least they didn't get you the cheaper version, the U-loose.

"Cultured Moose" means they played Mozart through a loudspeaker while they cut off its horns.

When I was in Anchorage a little while agao I picked up a couple of Ulu's at the Ulu Factory there. I don't know what blade steel they use, but it seems to work well in the kitchen. Unfortunately it has a wooden handle, not the "cultured" moose antler like above. ;)

I'm frankly suprised Cold Steel hasn't made one. I'd love a video of Lynn cutting a pizza.

Are you trying to say that a blade design exsists that Cold Steal has not tried to replicate and transform into one of their own that can cut a cow in half!!!

And now watch as the fat, balding guy in short-shorts swings an Ulu around slicing through people-shaped cardboard cutouts. The tactical and self-defense value of the Ulu has never before been fully realized.
We make our Ulu knives out of Krupp steel. Watch how the really big dude swings from the Ulu monkey bars with no damage to the knife.
You can also buy our video of "Ulu defense." In this video, Lynn Thompson, world renowned expert knife fighter demonstrates how an Ulu knife can be used to fend off multiple attacking salmon.

Don't misunderstand. I know if CS made an ULU, it would slice bamboo stands, bend 90 degrees and return to true, posess the aerodynamics to be thrown and return to the thrower handle first, and fit well as a neck knife. I just wanna watch Lynn cut a pizza with it.:D
Probably have to wait for the CS ulu 2.

I'm actually excited for Lynn to break out the Tanto-Ulu, as used by the Alaskan ninjas.

Link goes to The Ulu Factory's cultured moose handle ulu. Don't think you'll find "China" on it. http://www.theulufactory.com/inupiat_style_cultured_moose_antler/Default.asp

Here's my ulu:

Not only is the handle antler, the base is as well. I don't think it's cultured antler, at least the damned thing didn't smell very cultured while it was getting skinned and gutted. And no, that's not Krupps steel. It's not VG-1, either. I believe the technical term for it is "whatever the hell was lying around that particular day that was large enough to make a blade out of and still hold a good sharp edge while not worrying about such trivial things as rust." You can see why the maker didn't feel like printing the blade steel name on it. I'd have had to make an ulu that was 2 feet long. Of course that one really would be much better at cutting through life-sized cardboard people.
