I just purchased the XD40 Service Model, Wednsday. I took it out yesterday and at about the 30th rd of PMC FMJ's. The bullet didnt fire. Just a click. I looked at the primer and the firing pin had made contact with the primer. I reloaded the bullet and it shot fine. The next 20 rds. were fine with no more problems.

Today, I took it back out but this time I ran Remington UMC FMJ's through it. Again, at about the 30th round, it did the same thing, only this time, I had no firing pin mark on the primer. I reloaded the bullet and it work fine.

What could be causing this?

CumminsPower, I think that this just sounds like a gun with a strong firing pin spring, unsmooth firing pin channel, possibly out of spec firing pin, ect. Examine the firing pin to make sure it's within spec or just shoot it alot more and see what happens. You haven't shot this gun barely at all it seems.

Pick up a few more boxes of ammo and shoot it about 300 more rounds and I'll bet dollars to donuts that you won't have that problem anymore. But if you continue to have this problem let us know.

Thanks for the help. I will put a couple more boxes through it and see what happens and report back.

Well I just got back from putting 170rds of the Winchester wally world specials through it. Out of 170rds, I had 3 misfires. The first was like before and did not strike the primer, the last 2 had a very weak firing pin mark on the primer. So, after about 250 rds. through the XD, I have had 5 misfires, 3 that had a weak firing pin mark on the primer, and 2 with no firing pin marks at all. I am getting worried here, hopefully this thing just needs to break in like was said above.

Your XD should not require significant break-in to function reliably. Light strikes are usually caused by:

A) A weak striker spring
B) A poorly machine striker and/or striker channel causing the striker to bind
C) Debris in the striker channel causing the striker to bind

You can deal with C by thoroughly cleaning the gun and LIGHTLY lubricating it, which should have been done before your first range session anyway. Replacing the striker spring is a 2-minute task requiring only a flat-tip screwdriver to depress the spring back into position. B can only be diagnosed by dissasembling the slide. It's simple enough, but requires a clean brass punch to remove the roll pin that retains the striker.

Aside from that, it's probably due a trip back to Springfield. Thankfully, their customer service dept seems to be pretty good. Repairs on my 1911 Long Slide took about two weeks from initial shipment to receipt of the repaired pistol.
