Looking for a load for my 70 series Gold Cup. Will be for punching paper and I'm aware of the light recoil spring in these handguns.

Components:

185g Hornaday Jacketed SWC
Mixed Brass
CCI LP primers/maybe Magtech LP
Unique

My Hornaday manuals do not list a Unique load with 185g SWC.

I'm at 4.8g of Unique with Berry's 185g SWC and a COAL of 1.210.

My Speer's manual lists their TMJ SWC to start at 5.0g with a max of 5.8 of Unique with a COAL of 1.275.

I test fit my loads into my Kimber barrel and found that 1.210 worked well. Anything longer and it failed to feed miserably. I also tried 4.5g of Unique and couldn't get it to eject. 4.5g or lower might work if I put in another recoil spring but I still want to shoot WWB.

8.0 of Unique sounds pretty high to me. Especially if you're looking for a target load. The highest amount of Unique in my Speer's manual is 8.2 for 185 GDHP or TMJ FN. The velocity would be 1015 ft/sec. Probably batter your frame pretty good.

Yeah, 8.0 Unique sounds high to me as well. Just realized that I have a pound of AA #5 and Hornaday lists load data for that with 185g SWC. Guess I just found a reason to open that container of powder.

Heck, do a load with AA #5 and with Unique. Make 20 or so in increments of .3g (of if you really want to nail it down go by .1g increments) and go down until you find the lightest load that will cycle your pistol. AA #5 and Unique have similar burn rates but will still probably shoot a little different. The manuals are nice places to start but the fun is building a load that works best with your 1911.

Just make sure you test fit for COAL before making a bunch of loads. My brother's Springer likes 1.270 while my Kimber likes 1.210. Nothing's more frustrating than making a pile of ammo that won't load or eject.

My series '70 Gold cup load was a speer 200 semi-wadcutter run through the lubeasizer to take it down to .451. The load was 3.7 grains of bullseye. Extremely accurate.

adkwoodsman:thats about the load I use in my AMT longslide.factory spring.
mine is 3.7 with 700X 200 gr lswc.all my 45s work with that load 3 guns.the biggest change that is made is the hammer spring.thats the spring that determines the recoil level,not the recoil spring which is to return the slide to battery.:rolleyes:

4.1 grains of VV N-310 ought to put a smile on your face. I bump it to 4.3 to run in a Glock 21 under a 185 grain Montana Gold JHP...my favorite range load. Here's a link to some classic BULLSEYE LOADS (http://www.pelhamfishandgame.com/reloading/45/petloads.htm).

All my .45s, both revolvers and autos, shoot 200 LSWC with 3.5 Bullseye or Remington 185 JHP with 3.7 of Bullseye-dead-on accurate.

I use 4.1 grains of N310 with a 185 grain SWC for my bullseye competition load. It won't reliably cycle my gun with the stock spring, however, because my Ultradot is mounted on the slide. Works all day with a 12 pound spring.

Yep, a killer accurate load. Even at 4.1 grains it still cycles a stock G-21 about 90% of the time. I bumped it to 4.3 under MG JHP's with a 15 LB spring and runs it 100%...soft, clean and accurate as a Glock gets.
