Hello, this is my first post. I was wondering if anybody else has or had this issue with their M37. My Grandfather bought me this new in 1976 for my 16th birthday bless his heart, and I have ran many of shells thru it since. The problem I am having now it is really hard to rack the pump with the barrel on and nut tightened, if I loosen the barrel nut it gets easier, or take the barrel off it's as smooth as new? I visually see no thread issues with either the bbl or receiver. And yes throughout the years their has been an occasional 3" reload ran thru it (shooting skeet with a friends huge box of assorted reloads). Perhaps the bbl got warped or over heated thru the years? something bent?
Thanks for any advice, I just thought I would ask some of you guys before I take it to a gunsmith so he can charge me $50.00 to tell me I need a $300.00 bbl. Roger from Lapeer, Mi.

Hard to rack, how? Difficult to open? Difficult to close? Binding throughout the entire stroke?

I'd start with a detailed strip and cleaning. If you do not have the owner's manual, PM an email address and I'll send the .pdf file (seems Ithaca no longer offers it on their web site.) Perhaps something sludge bound, worn, or broken will be found in the process.

OK. I've been playing with my Model 37. The only point I see for mechanical interference between barrel and action is where the extractors enter the cuts in the barrel. As you describe manipulating the barrel retainer/magazine nut, I'll guess the barrel may be seating few degrees, or fractions of degrees off top dead center and binding one or both of the extractors against the side of barrel cut. Inspect the barrel stud for crud that may be preventing the barrel from turning fully home. Inspect the magazine nut and stud for wear that may be allowing the barrel to turn beyond top dead center. There may be wear marks on the extractors or barrel cuts to guide you.

It binds only at the top (receiver closed} in either direction down or up with about a 1 or two inch bind!. maybe your right about the extractor binding I will take a closer look in the morning.
Thanks for the help. my email is born2boogie60@gmail.com

The owner's manual .pdf is in the mail.

My extractors are clear of the barrel cuts with about " slide travel, hardly likely to account for 1" to 2" of binding. Perhaps that detailed strip and clean will turn something up. My 37 was far older than it should have been when I first stripped it down. I was amazed and appalled at the amount of crud that had accumulated.

Well after a full disassembly, de-burring and cleaning she is much better, not perfect but much better. I found many little burrs that I removed with a small file, and 32 years of crud that could never be removed without a total breakdown. Chuck THANKS AGAIN!!.
Roger.

Poor- Richard if you want to email me I will send you the M37 PDF my email is on an earlier post.

Sorry, folks, have been on the road for two weeks and away from the 'puter.

Roger: When I first stripped my M37 it looked more like a neglected autoloader than a pump to me, there was so much fouling in the action.

poor_richard: The manual .pdf is 2,223kb and I do not see an easy way to send it via private message. If you have not already received it from Roger K, I will happily email it to the address you provide to huckphinn at msn dot com.
