All my local stores have is a browning micro. I'm looking for a bolt gun that isnt going to kill me if I carry it around all day on the hunt. (Im not very big)

I can handle the recoil of .308 though.

I like the looks of the Savage Scout... but have never handled one in person.

Any recommendations for a rifle that would fit my criteria?

I'm not a huge Remington fan However, the Remington #7 in .308 is a niffty little rifle. As is the Winchester compact mod 70 in .308. I also own a Savage mod 99E feather weight .308. I love that little rifle!! If you can find a good used one you should buy it.

I don't really know but I'm sure that they'd be in the $650.00 range new. You can get a decent Mod 99 for about $350.00. And a Compact Mod 70 new is about $650.00 or so depending on if you want wood or synthetic.

I'll second the Rem. mod 7, my hunting partner uses one.. It's certanily an easy to carry little gun. Pretty stout recoil for a .308 but it seems to be an excellent balance of shootability and lug-around-ability :D

I carted it around a few times last fall while he was "under the weather" at camp.. Spoiled me to the point that I didn't want to lug my old model 88 around, felt like carrying a howitzer. ;)

rem model 7 is the way to go.
they run from $375-ish new to $600-ish depending on exact model.

i picked up my model 7 on the used rack for $325 (wood/blue). put some talley lightweight rings on it (base is integral to the rings), and a light scope of your choice (leupolds are very light, especially their compacts), and have yourself a nifty little shooter!

I bought a Model 7 in 7mm-08 and found it is even better than a .308, since it shoots flatter. I replaced the wood stock with a synthetic and added a Burris 2X7 compact scope. Handles lie a dream.

I vote Savage 110 series. With the money you save you can buy a weight set and go pump some iron! :D

Try a sporterized Enfield in .308 I built one for under $400. You can get them usually around $150, then go from there. If you want it shorter, look into the bushgun. Check out the Gibbs Rifle Companys line up.

Had a buddy of mine that used to hunt with a Winchester model 88, 4 shot lever action 308 ina VERY small package. Hard to find one used, but worth it.

The model 7 is light and small but be prepared, you'll get more muzzle blast/kick the lighter you go.

If you can find a model 600 Rem. .308 for $400 or less that would(is) my choice. I have a couple: one , in scout configuration by Brown Prescision, weighs 5.5 pounds with 2X Leupold. Another one built in 1977 by Chet Brown weighs 6 1/4 pounds with 2-7 Burris mini scope., was built before Chet had "superlight Kevlar option" with turned reciever ect.:D

I'd also recommend a Remington 600 or 660 in .308.
I have a Mohawk 600 (no vent rib), and love it.

I don't know how much the Model 7's run new but I gave 550 for mine NIB. Well worth it. One of the lightest guns I've ever carried around. Haven't regretted my purchase yet.

Caliber depends on what you want to hunt - .308'll do anything on the NA continent 'cept the big bears (& it'll do them, but maybe not 'fore they do you.)

We've Rem's M7s (18.5" tubes) in 7-08 & .308 - lovely li'l rifles.

I'd suspect other brands are as good shooters, but I do very much like the Rem's trigger adjustability. Neither the Savage or Winchesters seem to dial in nearly as well as do the Rems. YMMV

Everyone has recommended a Rem mod 7 (which I think are great guns but look at the Win mod 70 Compact Classic and the Ruger lightweight.

I have a Win 70 Compact in 7mm-08 that is sweet with a Leupold Compact 3x9 make for a very nice lightweight combo, I wish I had gotten the 2x7 compact instead.

Model 70 classic compact would be my first choice as well. It has a safety you can actually use and trust. As does the ruger.

Never and I mean never trust or even use a Remington safety. Always carry a Remington in condition 3 that is loaded but never chambered.
