While IMR say's 8.8gr for the 150, I have been told that I can run this up to 10.8gr. This is a heck of a difference, not to mention where does one start to work this up, as this would be more than a few trips to the range.

What been your experience?

Thanks,

Greg

Reviewing my notes I found that 8.0 gr of 800X gave the most accurate load with the God Dots. I ran them to 8.9 but the unburned powder only got worse after 8.5 gr. and there was no appreciable gain in velocity and decrease in accuracy. Very dirty to the weapon and lots of blowback of the unburned powder into my face and on my shirt.

The pressure is so low with 800X that one might have a tendancy to add more powder, but I wouldn't, because as the case fills, there may be a pressure spike. I wouldn't want to be the one to discover that the hard way.

800x is not a good choice of powder...

I recommend Power Pistol...it will work MUCH better. Blue Dot would be a close 2nd.

Powerpistol is ideal for 9mm, whereas Longshot is the best 40 S&W powder.
Look at the specs:

9gr PP => 1213 fps
10 gr LS => 1329 fps

Longshot is much better metering than 800-X too.

I'm getting ready to work up some 800x loads using 155 grainers in the .40. Longshot is a good powder, but it can't touch 800X for pure speed. I know, I've chrono'd Longshot loads from my Glock 35 (6") and while they were impressive, 800x has so far been more impressive.

Last week I chrono'd some 800x using 135gr Noslers. 11.5grs got me an average of a little over 1,700 fps. Longshot with a book max charged chrono'd an average of 1,550.

I'm confident that 800x will work very well with the 155's, hopefully close to, if not over, 1,500 fps.
To add, 10grs Longshot averaged about 1,380 fps (6").

BTW, I tried 7grs 800x for a 200gr pill and averaged just over 1,100 fps. No pressure signs whatsoever, so I think there is still a bit of room to work with this one.

wow, 1700 fps in a g35... what kind of spring do you use? I had to use a 22# one in my old G22 when I tried 12gr of LS under those noslers...

Yea, I use a 22lb captured spring on a stainless steel guide rod. Really the recoil wasn't bad at all and the cases looked fine. I'm sure I could got above 1700 using 12grs, but really it's almost pointless as 135gr bullets seriously lack sectional density and thus would lack penetration. However, for something flat shooting to used on vermin, I can't think of a better load!

I may work up to 10.8grs, but today I tried a batch of 10grs 800x behind a 155gr Rem JHP. 1.130" and Win SP mag primer.

Glock 35 w/ LW 6" barrel.

Average was 1,535 fps / 811 ft-lbs.

how do you reconcile the unsupported barrel? when I tried power loads I only used once fired brass and could easily identify the glock brass due to lopsided bulge on the casewall.

Well I've tried some 800x loads in the stock Glock 35 barrel, and there is a tad bit of bulge. However, the majority of the warmer loads I use the LoneWolf 6" barrel, it's very well supported.

Since there are no reliable "over pressure signs" in pistols, and you are way over listed max which is 6.3 gr., I believe you are in dangerous ground and you are viloating the rules of posting over max loads without disclaimers. When I took that load over 6.5 gr, there was no apprciable increase in velocity and it was still under 1000fps. and I backed off.

I have used VV N105 with 200gr bullets and at loads under max have achieved velocities around 1100fps.

shoney, did you use a 6" barrel as well? the added 1-2" might have allowed for increased utilization of the 800-x. I remember trying some compressed loads similar to SD's in a 4" barrel and seeing whole unburnt FLAKES in front of the bench rest. Depending on how close to his chrony he is shooting, unburnt powder might be recorded in error.

Shoney, if that load can be shot from a Glock barrel and there be no pressure signs, that's a good sign the load isn't in the dangerous category. I've loaded for the 10mm quite a bit too and on have gotten big swells in the brass. That is definitely a sign.

Blowing a primer out of the cartridge is a sign. Yes I've done it once a long while ago when I put a 180gr bullet accidentally on top of a 135gr load charge using Unique. Perhaps I should put a disclaimer on my load data, but if I felt that the loads were dangerous, I wouldn't have given the data.

As for the 6" barrel, I'll have to put the Barsto barrel in my G23 and see how big of a difference those 2 inches make. I'd say it'll make a pretty big difference, but usually, heavier bullets don't react as well to longer barrels as lighter weight ones. Still, I'd say you could knock off at least 100fps, and probably more with the lighter bullets.
