The grips on my Webley .38 ACP semi auto are falling apart, which is one of the reasons why I don't shoot it - so, this weekend I decided to make some walnut grips for it. For the first time I took the whole thing apart, just to get down to the frame.

My question is about the hammer spring.. I though that all of the 38's had a laminar spring to power the hammer. Not so mine. A coil spring with a plunger that rests against the hammer. The coil spring sits in a neat pocket in the frame. If you have a copy of Bruce's work on Webley auto pistols, and look at page 184, the hammer there is what I thought I would have (the pistol is a type III), but no. The hammer is a different shape to that shown. The arraingment is much closer to the .455 semi auto shown on page 248, but again, the hammer shape is different.

It's all academic, of course, but wondered if the board had any Webley experts lurking..

Steve.
