What can you tell me about the Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm Spec Ops. I cant find any info on it. Every search I do only comes up with crap I am not looking for. Looking for specs, how hard are they to find and why is it $125 more then the standard M&P 9mm.

Thanks Steve

I am not familiar with a "Spec-Ops" M&P model. Are you possibly thinking of the M&P9L with a 5" barrel?

I've seen a number of differnt setups made by guys in their garage shops with some being extremely nice, but Smith doesn't list or make a "Special-Ops" version. There is an after-market barrel that you can get threaded for a supressor, and it costs about $100 or so on it's own.

I have not heard of that model either. There is the M&P 9L and the 9 Pro.
They are essentially the same except for the sights and the sear.

If S&W were to bring to market something with the name M&P 9 Spec Ops, I would imagine that it would only be a big marketing ploy.

The biggest differences I can see are the threaded barrel and the big white "Spec Ops" lettering.

A local shop has one (Spec Ops) and a standard 9mm M&P. The slide and the barrel on the Spec Ops has a super tight fit where the stndard M&P is much looser. I wanted to know if they are hand fit, or is it all in my mind becouse I want it. Does anyone have one that they have shot?

Wow, a mall ninja must have!!!!

The slide to barrel on my 9L is super tight. My guess is you're seeing a good example of one and a poor example of another.

Looks like the M&P 9L or 9 Pro, except for the shorter, threaded barrel. I guess that's where your $125 goes.

I'll bet that the lettering costs more than the threading.

My son just bought a M&P 9. Iwas looking at the gun and did not see a safety on the gun. I ask him about it and he said it had a mag safety. Is this the only safety on the gun? And how does the mag safety work?

I need one of these barrels. Wonder if I should call S&W to see about a price.

There isn't an active mechanical safety; it's up to the shooter to keep their booger hook off the bang lever until it's time to shoot. A mag safety is primarily marketed toward law enforcement - in a struggle for the gun the user can drop the magazine and lock the weapon. Most civilian users find the mag safety or "magazine disconnect" undesirable.

As far as "passive safeties" (safeties that engage and disengage themselves through normal handling and use), there's the trigger safety that's found on this and a few other striker fired models. In addition, it has a firing pin block and a few other devices meant to prevent discharge from dropping or firing when the gun isn't in battery. Bottom line: If you pull the trigger on the M&P, it goes off. If that thought makes you nervous, it ain't for you.

FWIW, I think they dropped the mag safety on the newer models. I can state that there are MANY out there w/OUT the mag safety.

M&Ps come with or without the mag disconnect and it has always been optional on the line-up.

I own the S&W M&P 9 Spec Ops with the threaded barrel that came just like it is from S&W the company doesn't advertise this weapon most likely for the fact they don't market too many of them, the pistol has the trigger safety and i trust my S&W to not fire unless i pull the trigger i keep this pistol loaded on my person for more than 12 hours a day and i bang around the weapon alot with no incidents is a S&W so of course its trustworthy the trigger safety is more than enough because face it if you keep a loaded weapon on you when you need it do you really have time to mess with any kind of other safety...........i also put a ctc laser grip on it and i have to say this gun shoots true and i love it more than any other weapon i own. including a 1911

Does it come with the thread protector?

The S&W Spec Ops has the factory # 150398 and comes with a factory threaded barrel, 13.5x1 LH and 3 17-rd magazines. I have a SWR Trident 9 suppressor mounted on it along with the Crimson Trace laser grips. It makes a great package. Very accurate and, of course, pretty dang quiet. It does not come with a thread protector from the factory, but you can get one from Mark at TrosUSA for about $25.

Thanks, for the obvious tip.

My problem is that I can't find the item on their website. At least there is no mention of the M&P 9.

I'll re-check based on the thread size you quoted.

The spec-ops also has a lanyard hole in the base part of the takedown tool.

Gun comes with 3 mags and threaded barrel.

If standard M&Ps are shipping with just one mag, then the Spec Ops isn't a horrible deal if you want a threaded barrel and two more mags.
