Putting together a 1911

Are there places that sell things like the frames and parts kits to M1911s? I'm asking because I think it would be nice to have a completely customized gun, preferably handgun, preferably 1911. Also, which part does the ATF actually consider to be the gun? The frame? The bolt? Which part to you have to get through an FFL?
Also, something with a long slide would be preferable.
Thanks in advance.

I believe in the case of the 1911, it's the frame. However, depending on your location, you can buy a frame that's 80% complete, finish the job yourself, and not have to get an FFL involved. However, you can only do this if you can legally own the gun, it has to be you that finishes it, and you can never sell the gun. Also, i think you have to engrave a serial number into it. I'd do more research on it though, because i'm not sure about any of the above.

There are a bunch of online sources for 1911 parts. To kinda get an idea of what you might be getting into by building a .45, take a peek here.

My advice..purchase a fully built 1911 such as the Springfield Armory Milspec prior to trying to build one. You should be able to find a nice one for $400ish. I've also heard a lot of good things about the Rock Island Armory 1911s. They run about $350.
As for the " controlled" part, the frame is the item you must use an FFL holder for. Everything else you can order and have it sent straight to your house.

Yeah, the frame is the part you have to register (at least that's the way it is in CA). I have a buddy that had a custom 1911 built in 1999. Since then, he's had a 10mm, 357 sig & a 6" 45 super slide made for the frame he has and hasn't had to reregister it.

Check out Caspian arms......
They have frames...alloy, steel, titanium, they have slides...steel damascus in EVERY length. The slide and frame can be fitted there...then you add the parts!!
Good products too from what I hear!

Yes, the frame is the part that must go through a FFL. www.brownells.com has all sorts of 1911 parts. Order the catalog, it's worth the money just to be able to browse through it and realize how many different gun parts are out there. (I just searched for "grip safety" and got 29 responses.) I've heard it recommended that if you are set on building your own 1911, to get one of the frame/slide combinations (http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=1791) that have been fitted for each other.
