Favorite box magazine lever gun

September 9, 2008, 12:43 PM
I know of only a few lever guns with the box, which one is your favorite: the winchester 1895, Winchester 88, Brownling BLR, or Savage 99. Ihate that thing from Ruger. That is assuming all were still made todaoy and fires common ammo?
My would be the Win 1895's

Only one of those I have ever fired was a Savage 99.

It had been well-used, but also very well cared for...very slick rifle. IIRC, it was in .300 Savage cal.

I've only got 1 lever action with a box...its a Browning BLR in 243 Winchester.

Great lil rifle.

Here's the one I have -

It's a Miroku reproduction in .30-06. Color case-hardened receiver, barrel cut down to 20", Williams receiver sight and ramped front sight added, recoil pad and sling swivels added.

Great little brush gun, though it doesn't carry as well as a Model 94.

I have a BLR in 243, good rifle. I have had a 99 with the box magazine but I prefer the rotary magazine and that is what all my 99's have now. Traded the other one.

Savage 99

I have a 99 in .250/3000 and used to have an 88 .308 that I wish I had back. It would be my pick.

Mine is my Savage 99F in .308 Win.

The Browning BLR .308 is a light, accurate, hard hitting woods gun.

Not something you'd want to spend an afternoon target shooting with, but a great gun just the same.

I'll take a Winchester 88 in .243 please :D.

I have had close to a dozen Savage 99s and still have several. I love the design, with one caveat - the extractor STINKS.

I like the design of the 1895, excepting that I vastly prefer pistol grip stocks.

I'm not too partial to the Model 88, and prefer the BLR to it.

All in all, if I had to choose one tomorrow I would probably choose the BLR in pistol grip form.

Had a BLR good gun shot well enough and dad has a Limited edition 99 it's absolutely beautiful. But I want a 1895 in 30/40 Krag.

Have had a 99 and an 88 and a BLR - all in .243 and the mags were fine on all of them. Of the lot, the mag on the 88 was smoothest and the other two tie for second. The BLR is my favorite hunting rifle of the bunch though.

Winchester Model of 1895 in 30 US. (30-40 Krag)
Mine was made around 1900.

To be picky (and why not, I can be) the Savage 99 was typically a rotary magazine.

I know that Savage introduced a box magazine 99 in the late 60's but I don't have the exact date or length of run - would anyone have that?

And for the record, I do love my 1961 99F with brass spool, counter and trigger.

Sako Finnwolf in 243. My dad had one that my brother now has... What a beautiful gun and incredibly slick action. Too bad they are had to find and expensive.

Though I no longer own a single one, I've had three Winchester '95s. My first was a .303 British, then a Flat Side (manuf. 1896) in .30 U.S. (Krag), & finally a .405 WCF with, thankfully, a shotgun buttplate! I also had, for a short time, a MLR in .308 Win., which was the same rifle as the Browning BLR but with the Miroku factory markings rather than Browning's. This was in Australia in the 1970/80s when all the Japanese-made Browning rifles & shotguns were still being marketed with the Miroku label.....maybe they still are(?).
