Guns-rule ruling
The Michigan Supreme Court set back sensible gun control efforts this week when it let stand lower court rulings saying local communities cannot ban concealed weapons from city halls, libraries and other public buildings. Interestingly, the state's courthouses are among the gun-free zones. It must be said that the state's decision to relax its rules on concealed-carry has not spawned the rash of shootings that critics of the law, including the Free Press, feared. Gun owners and permit holders have been every bit as responsible as they said they'd be. Still, local communities ought to be able to decide where they are not comfortable with guns.
The Supreme Court decision means they'll have to take it up with the Legislature, where success on this issue would be, well, a long shot.
Good work by the Michigan Coalition of Responsible Gun Owners, who filed the original suit against the city of Ferndale.
Its good to see someone admitting that he was wrong about his predictions of bloodshed following passage of our shall-issue law.
