Im having the same problem I live in Edmundson, Missouri.

It would help to know what you need to have done. Gunsmiths tend to specialize. I would send you to a different smith for shotgun choke work than for rebarreling a rifle.

Midway USA has a Gunsmith Locator (http://www.midwayusa.com/gunsmithlocator/home.aspx?utm_source=gunsmithlocator&utm_medium=URL) that might provide a good starting point.

The gunsmith search only bring up smith's that are no closer than 100 miles from my house.:fire:

I have been having David Chicoine work on my guns for well over 25 years now. He is an accomplished gunsmith/author. In fact if you call S&W about an antique Smith - they will give you his number.

His prices are reasonable and his work is great. Check out his web-site

I hate to rain on your parade, but the chances of finding a good gunsmith within driving distance who can (and will) do what you want, while you watch, is probably not very good. I'm not trying to flame you, but a couple of gunsmiths that I know well gripe about this frequently.

If I have to ship my gun across the country and wait a couple of months to get the work done by someone that I trust to do the job right, well, that's just part of life. At least, that's how I look at it.

I'm not suggesting that you have to do this for every little bit of work that you need done, by any means. If you're fortunate enough to find someone locally who you trust that does quality work at a reasonable price, then consider yourself very fortunate.

ETA: FWIW, Hamilton Bowen is located pretty close to you, isn't he? I'd certainly trust him to do anything that my little heart desired. Providing that I could afford it, that is.

driving distance

Anyplace on the North American, Central American, South American continents are within driving distance, if you've got the time. That's a bunch of gunsmiths.
