Price check--used Model 66

I was looking at a used S&W model 66 w/ 2 1/2 inch barrel today. It's a police trade-in, showing the usual scuffs associated with such weapons. It will also need some serious cleaning up. This is an older version with the countersunk cylinder holes. It passed the Jim March test.
Price is $340.00. Does this sound high, or about right? Market area is NE Ohio. Thanks for all input.

$340.00 for one that is LNIB is a good price, but not for a police trade in. I would offer $240.00 and go from there.

Have to agree with Jason, around here (Phoenix) a NEW 66 can be bought any day of the week for $425-$440, so a LNIB would be about $350. A 66 that is scuffed and dirty would sell for around $250-$275.

I would have to agree with my friend, Mr. C.R. Sam
as you don't need to pay extra for someone's neglect and
abuse. Max Price: $220 lock, stock, and barrel!

In perfect working condition, no appreciable wear on working surfaces, no corrosion or pitting, only minor surface dents or scratches. This is the definition of "Very Good" per NRA Standards of Condition of Modern Firearms. I'd pay $225 for a model 66 in very good condition. To me, the one you're looking at would be worth a little less because you said it needs a serious cleaning.

I just received a new M66-8 (6") with the hammer-lock (test cartridge dated after last Christmas) from CDNN for $349.99 + S/H (no local FFL transfer fee) yesterday. I also received a M10-11 (2") for $279.99. They were ordered by phone Friday - fast! They shared a box of Blazer 158gr LRN .38 Spcl and were cleaned last night. Looks to be a great deal. I had nine revolvers - all .44 or larger. These are my first ever .357/.38's.

PS The 66 came with a Redfield see-through scope rail and 1" rings - even better deal. The order also included a freebie Swiss Army (Wenger 'Highlander') knife as a 'gift'. I will buy again from those folks...

$340 is WAY high for a used 66. I just got a NIB 66-5 3" w/ Hi-Viz front sight for $379.
Shop around and check gunsamerica, auction arms and gunbroker.

Pass on it entirely.
Don't be stupid enough to offer the guy $240 on a gun he's got for $340, unless you really want to piss him off and burn a bridge with a dealer you may have a good relationship with.
Used to have a guy come into our shop when I was working behind the counter. No matter what the gun, he always offered roughly 1/3rd the price on the gun, even if it was reasonably priced (and they were generally at this shop for the area), and would get offended when no one would deal. He also tied up sales people for long stretches, and rarely, if ever, bought anything. He simply didn't understand it when none of the sales people would deal with him.
These guns are far from uncommon. A little searching at a gunshow, or even Auction Arms or Gun Broker, should turn up one.

I note that you are in Ohio.
Actually, I skimmed the first post and the responses, and I said to myself "Gee, sounds like a fellow Buckeye." Then I reread and saw that you are, indeed.
I have had problems getting good used S&W revos for decent prices in this state. I'm certainly no market expert, and I'm not able to do gunshows easily due to my work schedule, but most of the time I've seen prices about $100 above what everyone on TFL/THR thinks is fair...and they are moving at that price.
So, don't be startled if you offer something deemed reasonable here and are told to take a hike. Someone will probably buy that revo, at that price...so in the seller's mind, that IS fair market value. And he has a point.

That sounds about twice what it is worth, so it is right on the money for a gunshop.:D Way high and many of these S&W 66s that I have seen are very loose. I passed up several because they were shaky.
If it is tight, maybe $250 OTD but not much more. The gun dealer probably paid $150-180 for it so don't feel bad about offering a lower price than $340.00.

Mike,
That's why I posted the market area information. I know that can make a big difference, at least in the brick & mortar stores. If prices are that much lower in most of the rest of the country I'll just look at alternative sources. Thanks again to all who responded.

I work in a gun store in SouthEast Missouri. If this Model 66 is in a pawn shop, then I would agree that the dealer may have no more than $160.00 to $180.00 in the revolver, if that much.
But, if it is a regular gun store, I would almost guarantee that the dealer has more like $225.00 to $250.00 in the gun. Gun stores have to give a little more for the used merchandise which comes in the way of trade ins. They have to give more in order to make the trades and move new merchandise. Regular gun stores almost never buy guns outright.
Pawn shops always low ball when pawning or buying guns. They get the people that are desperate for cash and take advantage of that.

Do you know the dealer well enough to ask him, and get an honest answer how much he has in this particular firearm? I know that my dealer will tell me what he paid for something I may be interested in, but then I drop at least a grand there a year.
$340 would be an average price here in Massachusetts, but the market has gone up a lot due to the interference of the State AG.
The fine art of dickering...er....negotiating a selling price is delicate and requires some finesse. The only reason I might consider this is that the M66 2 1/2" barrel is a nice firearm.

That's him giving YOU $225 to take such a piece of crap off his hands, right? :)
