What gives with drop in barrel makers for Savage. The only varmint weight .223 or .223 AI has that retarded 1:14" twist. I really want to step up to the AI, but I need a twist of 1:9 to stabilize the 55-69 grain bullets I like and have a surplus of.

I'm really surprised that Shilen or McGowen doesn't make a 1-9. You could always find a factory barrel in 1-9 (or 1-7), and a good smith can "ackleyize" it in nothing flat. The smith can rent a reamer to do it.

Edit - Shilen lists a 223 AI under their calibers.

Sharp Shooter Supply has .22 barrels in 8", 12", and 14" twist; and I think they chamber for .223 AI. Good barrels, Douglas XX in any length up to 26" or 27" as I remember. An 8" twist will do well with 55 to 75 gr bullets.

My bad no .223 AI, but they do chamber for the .22-243 AI for people who want their barrels to wear out REALLY fast.... Mmmmmm, 50 gr of powder down a .224 hole, sells lotsa barrels I guess.

Yeah, but 4000 fps. Most good smiths will rent an ackley reamer for you.
