1911 Carry Choices...

September 11, 2008, 06:14 PM
I'm curious about the 1911's you all carry concealed. Please select the options that apply to your ccw 1911 style pistol (loose definition). I'd just like to see what the most common choices are, and if you want to go into detail about your pistol, the make & what holster you carry in... I'm really wanting to see if anybody conceal carries a full size, or if the shrunken single action self loaders are king now...

I carry a full size Gov't model on a daily basis. Its a 1969 build that was my fathers till he died and I got it. Nothing fancy, walnut grips, GI sights. I carry in a Ugly Bald Guy iwb holster. My only grip is the hammer spur digging into my side... though if I lost 20 lbs...

I marked a number of things that apply to the 1911's I carry, or have carried, and may again, at certain times. :)

Carry a 10mm Govt model or 10mm CCO depending on the circumstances.

Rock Island Armory Compact model, same size as a Colt Officer's ACP. Carried in a Beltster, currently has LaserGrips and a Chip McCormick flush-fit Shooting Star mag.

Currently I am carrying a full-size RIA that started out as a GI but has been extensively modded as it is my pet gun.

Othertimes I carry a SA Champion with beavertail, nightsites, parkerized, Wilson slim grips.

I voted for a 5" cause it's all I got. In 1911:D

September 11, 2008, 09:34 PM
Although I haven't carried it, I have the ideal carry 1911. A Colt CCO. Commander length stainless slide (4.25 inches) on a matching alloy Officer frame.

5" Steel Frame Parkerized Night Sights

In a Bianchi No4 Askins Avenger type holster

I noted 4.25", but I also have a 4". The 4.25 is a CBOB and the 4' is a Kimber Pro Carry. They are both equally sweeeeeeeet!!!!

No poll choice for the 4-inchers? That rules out the SA Champions, the Kimber Pro models and a whole host of others ...

September 11, 2008, 11:59 PM
Sorry, Old Dog. I almost put it in there, but figured it would be close enough. And I wanted to have enough options for some of the other common carry choices to be made. So since 4.25" was the Colt measurement... Basically I just had to pick one.

4"/4.25" is King so far... I thought that might be the case, but somehow I'm still surprised a little.

All are 5", steel frame and have beavertail safeties. Other options are sorta inconsequential to me. For example, one has an ambi safety, another doesn't, etc.

Just a note - "Commander Size Grip" should be "Officer Size Grip". The Colt Commander and similar models from other makers have a standard length grip and a 4.25 inch or 4 inch barrel.

That said, in a good holster my 5" gun carries just about as easily as my Commander. Haven't placed with an Officer's model yet.

I currently carry a 5" beavertailed stainless Springfield. Its a little big for CC, but with a little forethought it can be done.

However, I've been thinking about a Kimber Ultra Carry. It would be concealable under a wider variety of clothing.

Full size Kimber Custom II, Steel frame, Meprolights... beavertail grip safety.

September 12, 2008, 08:39 AM
Kimber Ultra Carry or my Para LTC. I change monthly for no apparent reason. :)

My wife and I carry the RIA Commander and Officer models or RIA's versions of those models. Both are highly customized, with reliability packages, trigger jobs, beavertail safeties, Novak sights, etc. If I was to buy another carry pistol now, I would get lighter weight pistols, probably XD's, since the grip angle is about the same as a 1911.

September 12, 2008, 09:17 AM
Right now it's my Para LTC. As soon as I get a few rounds thru my Springer Champion (a stainless 4") it will join the rotation...

Slightly modified 5" GI model carried in a Don Hume J.I.T.

To me, Colt's LW Commander is The King when it comes to carry 1911s. But the pre-series 80 only, especially not the XSE -- why on earth FCS's on a Commander? And not with the original itty-bitty sights; I favor Novak Trijicons.

But I also like the SA Champions (SS Loaded and the older LW models), Kimber's CDP Pro and Tactical Pro pistols.

Full-sized 1911s for carry include a Colt's Series 70 and a Kimber TLE II.

Favorite holsters are Kramer's Belt Scabbard for OWB, his IWB 3 and Milt Sparks VM2 for IWB. A Galco Jackass rig when in Sonny Crockett mode ...

Springfield Micro Compact that has been extensively modified. I don't actually carry it just yet but will as soon as the the frame is refinished.

September 13, 2008, 01:26 AM
Which 1911 are you referring to? I've been known to carry several, in many configurations, but not all at the same time.

Nowadays, I chose between a modified Sistema, a Colt New Agent, a Kimber Pro Carry, a SW1911PD, or a modified Colt Compact.

Dan Wesson Bobtail or my Defender. I carry either .

Just got an Escort STI. Light and very accurate.

For me it's a Les Baer Stinger; CDRs 4.25" slide/barrel, Officer's grip in SS. I shoot it about as well as my 5", and it conceals a little easier.

Blue steel, Commander sized.

Custom additions: new sights and grips.

Carried in an old DeSantis #2 belt holster.

Full size Les Baer PII

September 13, 2008, 11:23 PM
Here's mine: A S&W 1911PD Commander size. I had it bobtailed which makes it surprisingly more comfortable to carry...you'll see in the other photos how the corner sits high up, when its removed not only does it conceal much better but that corner never digs into my side. I carry it in an Andrews McDaniels II. I love everything about this rig. I made a set of Afzelia thin grips for her.

I wound up checking almost all of the choices. I have multiple 1911's and will vary which one based on what I am wearing. Carrying a full sized 1911 is not that hard with the right equipment. Currently with the temps here in Vegas I am using my SIS Ultra in a Galco Summer Comfort IWB. This hides quite well. Once the weather starts to cool down I will move up into either the 4 inch SIS Pro in a Galco Silhouette or one of my 5 inch models.
