Posts vs. pages

Look at this thread...

Quick or you'll miss it.

I see it has enough posts for 3 pages (71 right now). Yet at the top and bottom there is a link for page 4.

As well, the post list says it has 75 posts. Still not enough for 4 pages, but not the actually count (71) either.

I've seen that alot lately. I have a hunch what it might be, but I thought I'd ask. Anyone?

I'm not sure how often we'll have to explain the unexplainable:

"I have a hunch what it might be ..."
What is your hunch? It might shed some light on the DB glitch.

Oh man. My apologies. If you look over my posting history (which I doubt you'll do anyway), I just about never post a dup.

My hunch is that it may be counting deleted posts.

Or, if the "report" of a reported post displays inline in the thread to those who are meant to see it (as I am not an admin/mod I wouldn't know), possibly those are counted in one place but not another. (This one seems to easy to notice, and thus unlikely).

It does seem more prevalent in controversial topics, but that may just be coincidence.

Actually, I think you're right. Most threads that have demonstrated the glitch do have some deleted posts. I never counted the exact number.

Reported posts only generate emails to the various mods and admins. Nothing is appended to the body of a thread -but, that's a darn good idea! I would like to see threads flagged (only mods and admins could see the flag) when a new report is made on a post in that thread. As it is now, if we don't look at our emails constantly, it can be hours before a reported post is known; not a very robust system at all.

I just went through that w/ the 'strange range behavior' thread

it said it had a Pg 2, but wouldnt go to it, then did and it was a full page, then someone posted and all but his post was moved to pg1

Pretty sure it's deleted posts. Somewhere the software is counting all posts, even the deleted ones, but of course it can only display the visible ones.

More on this. This thread...

I posted the 25th post. After I posted, I noticed Henry's was still #24, but mine was tagged #26 with nothing in between. I refreshed and it changed to #25.

Just trying to help if this is still being looked at in any way. I won't bump this thread again. No need to reprimand.
