What are your thoughts on Hornady a-max bullets compared to sierra or even lapua. I just purchased a box of 155a-max,178a-max and a 168HPBT. How do each of these compare to sierra's bullets in the same weight. My rifle is a 10fcp. Unfortunatelly my press isn't here yet. Any thoughts or experiences would greatly be apreciated.

I havent loaded an AMax into a gun that didnt like it, assuming that you keep within the bullet weight [read: LENGTH] vs. twist rate range.

I have loaded the 75 grain AMax in both a 1:7 twist AR (single shot...) and, believe it or not, into a 1:9 twist 527 CZ Kevlar Varmint. At 100 yards, it would hold around 1.5" for three shots. I was not impressed, as this was the best I could do trying all different combinations. However, at 300 yards, they actually tightened up, shooting about the same group. I think they took a bit to stabalize. I use the 52 grain AMax in a Sako .222 and a .223 (the Kevlar Varmint) and it shoots into a half inch pretty regularly, if I do my part.

My friend loads the 168 Amax into his Savage bull barreled 308. Im not sure of the load specifics, however it opens up a nickle sized ragged hole at 100 yards for 5 shots. He shot a deer with the same gun/load last season about about 60 or so yards here in Wetzel County, WV. Little hole in, destroyed the lungs, ribs, and heart, leaving a fist-sized exit leaving. They work well on game despite what Hornady tells you.

Try them, you wont be disappointed.

+1. Have shot the 178gr Amax in both .308 and .30-06.

Im still developing .308, but A-max has done well. I have initially had a better jumping off point with 168gr HPBT-M in both Sierra and Hornady, so Ive abandoned the A-max for now. 42.1Gr Re-15 and 168gr HPBT-M has been the best combo so far for my rifle.

It's all about which bullet your rifle likes. Even of the same weight. Try a box of each.

I shoot a Ruger KM77VTMKII 26" bbl .308 Winchester, have shot the 168 gr HPBT Hornady #30501,the Sierra 155 gr Palma Match King, but my only clover leaved shaped, ragged one hole five shot group, was acheived with the Nosler155gr Custom Competion HPBT.

RE 15 was the powder, but Varget is a close second.
