A small hole

Hello everyone. I'm new to posting on this forum put have been reading it for some time now. Most people here seem to be very knowledgable about firearms and many of the posts have helped me out alot. I hope this question makes sense. I'm looking at a stainless Ruger Blackhawk and I noticed a small obviously milled hole just opposite the loading gate. It's in the area that when the loading gate is closed it's covered. (I hope this discribes it well enough) Anyway, is this supposed to be there? My, experince with single actions is limited but I don't recall ever noticing this before. Otherwise the revolver is in super nice condition. Thanks

Rugertommy,
Welcome to the forum.
I believe the hole you are refereing to is the hole for the firing pin retainer pin. It actually goes all the way through the frame to the left side, but is usually polished so well you can't see it.

No, this is actually in the 'port' that the loading gate closes into right next to the cylinder. If I'm not mistaken what you're speaking of is right below the sight but above the loading gate. If that's it then yes, it is polished and can only be faintly seen on the left side of the one I looked at. Thanks

I'm pretty sure J Miller is right. The FP retaining pin goes at a diagonal from the top left and slightly below the sight (as you would normally hold the gun) to the bottom right with the right hole just about centered in the loading gate. If the pin went straight across, it wouldn't be anywhere near the FP.

Thanks for the replies. I called Ruger and the told me that it is the FP retention pin and that the hole is the other end of it. So, all is well. Thanks for the input.

Ah! Good. I'm glad they knew what it was. Here we thought it was the firing pin retaining pin and all. Just shows to go ya.

Drat! Another mystery solved. So much for my well used but never honored offer to buy a broken gun cheap. ;)
