That's eastern region where the deer are on the smaller end of the NC spectrum. That time of year is typically fairly warm during the day, but the early morning may not be too bad. We've also had a relatively mild summer this year compared to recent years so that may work in your favor. Good luck!

280 nc doesnt allow crossbows without a permit and to get the permit you must be disabled
rantingredneck
September 13, 2008, 12:53 AM
Yeah there is that. You'll need a disability certification and permit from the WRC to use a crossbow here. My Father in law uses one due to open heart surgery 2 years ago (will be using it in about six hours to be exact, which means I need to go to bed :uhoh:)

I'm itching hard to get the season going. My bow season got cut short last year due to a treestand accident. Hunted opening saturday and fell the second saturday. Broken back, surgery, 3 months in a brace, missed the rest of bow and muzzleloader seasons. Making up for lost time this season.

Well then you are definitely good to go with the crossbow. Good luck to you. My nephew nailed a fat doe this morning. His first bowhunt ever and got his first deer with bow. Beginner's luck I tell you. :D.
I didn't see anything...........

Well there sure isnt anything beter then getting your first Deer with a Bow,lucky or not,its a kill.
I have a few deer mounted up on my wall..My brothers look at them and scarf,All i have to say, well how many have you killed with a bow,? that shuts them up.I only just started using the cross bow the last 2 years, so most of my kills were with a reg Bow.

I'm the same way. A couple of respectable but not impressive bucks on the wall from a bow. Lots of does over the years.
My nephew has killed a good number of deer in the time he's been hunting but this is the first time he's been out with a bow. He paid attention to the coaching my father in law and I have given him and he's done the hard work of practicing regularly. It paid off.
His shot on the doe was a textbook quartering away shot. Entered just rear of the shoulder and came out under the leg on the opposite side. Lungs deflated and heart penetrated. She didn't go far at all.

280shooter good luck to you. I only live about 20 minutes from clinton in perder county myself. Average buck you ask of should be in the 150 range like was stated above. just getting a few cooler days here so maybe by the time you get to town the mosquitos will have died a little bit. We have some around here big enough to carry you away haha.

I been watching the weather,I guess i'll be wearing short sleaves, and shorts,
The Deer wont be in the rut,And i take it they will be out of velvet by Oct 1 st,

September 19, 2008, 01:29 AM
yes sir you are correct on that. All deeer by that time should be out of velvet. Also IMO our rut doesnt really kick off until about thanksgiving. If you were coming after Oct 18th you might get introduced to the sport of running deer with dogs. thats huge around here.

This smallish 8 pointer was out of velvet tonight when I took him. And by the time the sun went down I was wanting a sweater. He walked out of the cutover at 10 mins to 7. I watched him for 20 mins before he gave me a shot. He was about 12 ft from the base of my tree when I shot him. Nearly straight down. He ran about 40 yds.

the rut doesnt start here untill around trick or treat time,
I have my camera set up at my apple trees,so far i only have a Doe with two babys, with spots,I have one of the Bushnels pro scouts..Junk for sure.I watched a heard of deer feed on the corn i put out last winter, that thing never flashed,Not one time, and i had it set up 10 feet from the corn,
So i cant depend on that thing,if i put it out in the woods,

280 where are you from?
if your in state you should use some of our vast amounts of public game lands when you get a state hunting liscense just tell them you want game lands and you can use the public land
even if your out of state but with in driving distance the liscense goes up in price but its alot cheaper than a guide

hey, here's a NC question - why do I pay more for a non resident license as a resident of Virginia than if I were a resident in another state ($50 vs $40)

Paintballdude.
Yes i'm from PA,
I do hunt on some stage game lands.
I have A Disabled persons permit,(to use A vehicle) I can drive on some of the state game land roads, that are closed to everyone else. Most aren't right around the corner for sure.

counter i think it has something to do with how much va charges nc residents
280 yeaaah pa is a bit of a drive for a weekend hunt i was thinking that you could save some cash by just using game lands instead of hiring a guide but pa is to far to justify that

I live about 45 min. from Clinton. Duplin County is the next county east of Sampson (where clinton is). Duplin was in the top 10 for bucks killed in N.C. I believe they were in the top 20 for bear too.

well, got two does. But yeah, these were real small deer.
I passed on a 6 pointer, which in hindsight I should have shot. Saw lots and lots of deer - I just kept passing them by cause they looked so small. But then, I was told they were small.
Good eating though (I was hunting just outside of Warsaw)
