I dragged out my S&W revolver collection (alright, collection may be too strong a word....my 5 revolvers ;) one rainy day this week and resolved to do some preventive maintenance. Using my newly obtained gunsmith-type screwdrivers, I removed the cylinder latches on all and applied blue Loctite before replacing and tightening (trying to avoid the experience of finding it missing at the range or in the field). Also checked all frame screws for tightness. Found a couple frame screws that needed a turn, but my biggest surprise was this: my older revolvers all had tight latch screws, but my newest (an X frame w/ less than 50 rounds) was VERY loose. Thanks to all for sharing their experiences, as I would have hated to be crawling amongst the October leaves looking for it during deer season!!
