What is the affective killing range of a 30-30 round when using it for whitetail?

I really don't know what the effective range is, but I've shot a mulie at 157 paces using a 170 gr soft point. FWIW I did have scope mounted (old eyes and fuzzy sight picture otherwise).
YMMV

I killed a decent forkhorn whitetail at 238 steps with a peep-sighted 94 Winchester, using 150 grain Silvertips. I knew I'd be hunting near the beanfields that year, and had sighted in for about 175.
Terminal ballistics were more than enough, and the ST took about a thumb-size piece of shoulder bone out upon exiting. Bucky made it about 15 feet and then plunked over.
Good eating, and much satisfaction.

With a bolt-action Remington 788 I can go at least 200 yards and in a pinch maybe 250. After that the energy falls off too much but accuracy is just fine.
