Scope Mount on a Yugo SKS is a felony

Apparently those wonderful people at the BATF technical branch in DC have ruled that the simple act of putting a sighting device on a Yugo SKS will render an otherwise unmodified gun illegal, i.e. unless you chop off the evil bayonet lug and barrel threads etc as well.

Let me see, we have thousands of M59/66s being old everywhere right now with the standard crappy iron sights. Replacement rear receiver covers with cheap but surprisingly good compact scopes are available from $50 and up from a whole host of places. Just pull the old one off and clip the new assembly in place, makes for one fun little combo - right ? WRONG.

I picked this up on a dedicated SKS forum, if anyone needs a link just let me know. I am still having trouble believing that it is this easy to pick up a felony conviction, I mean, for fitting a $30 Leapers scope - why is the system so wrong ?

A link would be nice. A copy of the ATFE letter would be better. This is the errornet after all.

You're right I should have added the link in the first place.

This should give you links to at least one other board and the text of responses received from the BATF, it seems quite unequivocal in saying that a Yugo SKS + scope = jail.
