I've done a search on several of the applicable forums here on THR and can't find exactly what I'm lookin' for.
Finding the exact distance to a Prairie Dog (P.D.) mound is critical when the shot is past 400 yards. Well, you can only imagine how important it is at ranges like 600-1000 yds! The trouble is, I can't get a distance with my Bushnell Yardage Pro (good to 900 yds if bounced off a solid object) on a mound at anything past 350-400 yds.
Just wondering if anyone has the Yardage Pro Elite 1500 and has used it in relatively flat terrain which has no vertically flat feature to bounce off.
Does the military have anything that is better than what we can get thru the BigBox stores? Is it available to the general public?
Price isn't that much of a factor 'cause if I'm going to continue to run out to the Dakotas twice a year for long distance shooting at a cost of $500-$600/trip, then the price of one of the most important components becomes a moot point.

I've been looking for a rangefinder too. I posted the same question on the 24HourCampfire forum and hands down the most recommended rangefinder was the Leica CRF 1200. My problem is that money is a factor!

I've got a pair of Leica Geovids, I know they are big bucks but they are worth it.

leica crf 1200 is the way to go for longer distaces.

I have a Leica and while expensive, they are the best by far. I used to have a Bushnell but reliability was a factor. My Leica is right on the money every time.

I've ranged to 1200 with my Bushnell Elite 1500. Ranged to 1400, but it was a mountain. Problem with ranging at that distance is holding it still, especially on PD size targets.

My Bushnell was pure aggravation; slow and inconsistent. Put in my golf bag where it belongs. Got the Nikon 1200. Just got back from a caribou hunt where ranging to 1000yds with good arm support was ultra quick and to half a yard increments. 300 to 500 yds ranging was a snap.

Leica CRF 1200 is the best value for the money and the best range finder on the market there is no comparison.

If it says 1200 on the side of a leica by god that is what it'll do.

Bushnell range finders are a rip off IHMO.
