I usally shoot an H&G 68 style 200 gr LSWC out of my kimber. I have switched over to plated b/c the wife got pregnat and is all concerned about lead issues. Lead issuses aside, I have been having real trouble making them fuction.

Then the light bulb came on when i read a post by 243winxb.

my gold cup likes the measurement from the head to the shoulder of the swc to be .947" The reason to measure from these 2 points is that the alloy of the cast bullet changes the length of the bullet from base to tip of the bullet. As i seat the bullet into the rifling to eliminate end play, this measurement must remain constant. A change as little as .005" longer will keep the slide from fully closing. This is how i load to get accuracy at 50 yds. for bullseye competitions.

That's the key. Berry's 200 gr swc are not H&G 68 style. they are about .030 shorter in oal. So if i seat them at 1.250 like there lead counterpart it makes the shoulder higher causing problems. I should have used my barrel as a gauge and i would have found this out sooner. I seated them at 1.240 and problem solved. I was trying crimp, flare, all kinds of stuff with no results. Live and learn.

Wilbert,

I didn't realize that switching over to plated b/c could get a wife pregnant. Wow, thanks for the info.

That was in my mind also. 1st, Figure out how your wife got pregnant before jumping off the deep end and changing one of the more important things in life; Shooting.

Serious question, should I start wearing a condom while reloading lead bullets?

Lead posioning is overrated. Hell I grew up eating lead paint chips and i'm just fine.

Serious question, should I start wearing a condom while reloading lead bullets?

I see... you shoot indoors. I can understand that... but frankly, if she's pregnant, I still wouldn't shoot indoors. Modern primers have a bit of lead styphanate (don't know if I spelled that right) in them as well. I would just shoot outdoors, and use whatever bullet you want. I don't shoot at indoor ranges for just that reason, and that the local indoor range has VERY poor ventilation. If your indoor range has good indoor ventilation, then whether you use lead bullets or not probably does not matter. I would also check with her doctor as to whether the noise would do any harm to a fetus, I have no idea on that one.

My wife and I are still rolling on the floor after that one. If only we knew that many years ago. We thought it it was caused by watching the Johnny Carson Show!

Congrats on the up coming child, hope all goes well for your wife.

Heck if all it takes is changing bullet types to keep her happy, your a lucky man!

Take her to dinner after going to the range.

Have Fun, Be Safe, Go Shooting.
