My Kimber ran about $700 several years ago. I saw them at the gun show this month in the $850 range but they all are going up. The price range you mention is a little low for the top end, quality 45 acp's.

There are some out there so keep looking or buy a Kimber now and never look back.

Buds' Gun Shop has Colts for around 700... I just got one, it's really nice...

Springfield armory has some 500-600 range.

RIA has them 300-400

For true commander length, the DW CBOB, Colt Commanders (well, yeah), and S&W 1911PD come to mind. All should be under $1000 or pretty darn close to it.

A Colt is always the right answer!

Springfield has a couple in the under 1000 range.

RIA has the low cost end covered.

The Colt has the fewest MIM parts and it is the orginal!

I do like my XSE LW Commander. With the shipping and the transfer it was still under $900.

Yep, get the real McCoy!

Centerfiresystems is listing a Rock Island in commander size for under $400.

thx 4 the replies. i asked because looking at the various manufacturers websites and seeing the msrp is discouraging. i realize that real world price and msrp differ substantially on most occasions.

i really like the dan wesson, heard a lot of good, as well as the colt. it seems some people if it aint colt its a copy. true enough. but what sets the dan wesson and others apart from the colt as far as how accurate, how it feels, smoothness of action etc? are they really worth the extra money for say a dan wesson or a custom gun as opposed to a stock colt or springer?

Star PD. They aren't made anymore but ours have been reliable, accurate, and don't break the bank.

A true Commander is 4.25" barrel with a bushing on the slide for take down.

Colt, DW, S&W, and SIG all do true 4.25" Commander length bbl/slide pistols. Of those, only Colt uses an internal extractor, as 1911s are designed to have.

Springfield Armory, Rock Island Armory, and Kimber make their pseudo-commander 1911's with a 4" bbl and a bushingless slide. All use the correct internal extractor. However, bushingless recoil spring setups require a little wire tool to capture the spring for take down.

If you want a commander style 1911, get the real thing - a Colt Commander.

I thought the DW had an internal extractor.

This one cost me about $450 IIRC, but that was about 10 years ago. Some here have raised their noses at it for some reason... perhaps some 1911 experts here can tell me why. Somthing about MK IVs not being "real" colts or something.

It looks like a real Colt to me!

While I am not a fan of the current FPS, I will buy another one at some point.

After shooting my pre-80's series Combat Commander I wonder if I should buy a new one and save the old one.

KRS, that's exactly the one I got, from the place I got mine. I ordered mine when it was about 20 bucks cheaper... but their price includes shipping which is nice.

My DW has an internal extractor. $959.

Try STI. They have the least MIM crap of "production" 1911's.
Plastic MSH and trigger suck, but are easily changed out.
Great guns.

My DW also has an internal extractor. I believe CZ/DW dropped the externals, but am not certain of that across the entire line. I will say (having had issues with DW pistols I owned in the past), I absolutely love my CZ/DW bobtail in 10mm. It was around $900 as I recall, from Bud's. It is tight, has a great trigger, and is very accurate. I love the two color night sights. Fit and finish are superb, with nice fine checkering and a lovely polish on various parts. It is my usual carry pistol in colder weather when I am wearing jeans that can support its weight (us skinny guys have trouble with pistols pulling our pants down). If you want a Commander, give them a look. I also have a Kimber CDP Pro Carry that is a wonderful pistol, although it is shorter than a true Commander length gun.

I'm really happy (ecstatic actually) with my DW CBOB. I've not owned any Colt 1911s, but have shot a few and they've all been very nice.

I think you get more for your money with a Dan Wesson, but I don't think you can go wrong with either.

My experience with Springfield has been similar, but I think Dan Wesson gives you the most gun for your money until you hit a full on custom pistol.

Thanks for the update on DW switching to internal extractors.
Try STI. They have the least MIM crap of "production" 1911's.
Plastic MSH and trigger suck, but are easily changed out.
Great guns.
Unless STI has made major changes they're full of MIM parts. I almost bought one fall of '06, but didn't because of MIM parts content. I got a SIG GSR instead, because it used all machined from stock internals. The GSR is the only 1911 I've serious problems with (I've owned 7 1911s and I'm only in my mid twenties). A couple Springfields and Kimbers later and I've learned that the level of quality control of the manufacturing process makes more of a difference than the specific manufacturing process. Knowing what I know now, I'd buy an STI in a heartbeat if a good deal came along.

Rock Island is making a commander now but I am not a huge fan of their stuff. Probably OK but the fit and finish does not impress me.

I really like my Dan Wesson Bobtail but they are 950ish new. I got mine for $750 used and their was a beautiful one on that just sold for $700. Shop around and you can find them used in the $700 range.
