Does anyone have any ideas about the effectiveness of various things we do?

I'm guessing that a mailed letter counts more than a phone call counts more than an email (or maybe they just value the votes of the non-tech-savvy more...).

Posting about stuff here, or talking over lunch at the gun club is probably near zero...

Anybody ever read anything on this sorta stuff?

I've heard a saying that, from an activism standpoint, an email equals 1 constituent, a fax equals 10, a phone call equals 100 and a snail mail letter equals 1,000.

I don't know if that's true but it seems reasonable. I've begun trying to send snail-mail letters more and emails less.

I remember being told that a snail mail had the impact of 100 but that was back in the 1970s before email had been heard of.

Email rates the least, due to its ease of spammage--and IIRC, handwritten takes precedence over typed in snailmail. Halitosis-range in their office gets the most of all, though... well, except for "campaign contribution", anyway.

I think the effectiveness of letters of snail mail days are long past. With today's screening technologies, processes, the actual reading, and the actual counting of the letters actually takes longer and might occur AFTER something huge has come and gone. I think E-mails are definitely counted, during the VA Legislature's "Lobby Day" where the entire building was opened for citizens to talk to their reps and Senators, the Legislative Assistants we spoke to were talking about how effective E-mail is. They can quickly sort it, count it, and give a raw number to their legislator MUCH more quickly than with Snail mail. Phone calls still rank #2 though as they consider it something that takes time to do. A visit to the office during business hours counts highest I believe.

Now, what does Tiny's post tell us?

Typing 3,000 words in your email, explaining just exactly how you feel, is USELESS.

however...

Two or three one to two-sentence paragraphs (makes for VERY quick and easy data assimilation by the intern...) are HIGHLY effective.

Say what you mean in the first sentence of the first paragraph.
