How... odd.

The safety tab doesn't want to go into the 3-o-clock "full safety" position.

I've dissassembled the bolt, gotten all the gunk out, put it back together... no dice. However, when the firing pin-bolt shroud combination is assembled outside of the bolt sleeve, the safety works fine.

Once the bolt is all together again.. won't work.

what's going on -- any ideas for where to look?

That safety is not working right. You might be able to grind a little off the cam tip of the safety, but that requires a bit of study to make sure things will be OK. The situation you describe is commonly found when sears or cocking pieces have been polished down to do a "trigger job", so you might find that one or the other will need to be replaced.

If you do get the safety to move to the ON postion (3 o'clock) test it by then pulling the trigger and letting it up, then moving the safety to the OFF (9 o'clock) position. If the firing pin drops, do not use the rifle; take it to a gunsmith if you can't replace the parts yourself.
