I inherited a gun from my grandfather and have no clue what it is/ worth/ etc.

The serial number is K548201

I wanted to get advice from real people/ as the gun exchange places can tell I have no clue what I'm talking about. A guy in the store recommended I come here.

I'm hoping someone can help!

Thanks in advance.

S&W perhaps? If you open the cylinder and look on the frame just in front of the space the cylinder just came out of you can find the model number and generation. That information will be helpful to those who have the resources to look up the build date based on serial number. You might want to post that information as well. Welcome to the forum. :)

Smith & Wesson K-38 Combat Masterpiece made & shipped in about 1963.

The 15-2 was made from 1961 to 1967 when changes were made to make it the 15-3.

It is a very desirable S&W!
Probably worth $400 in excellent condition.

Sorry for the loss of your grandfather, but you got a heck of a fine gun from him.
Cherish it!

The K in the serial is a tip-off that it is a K frame with adjustable sights. The 38 caliber means it has to be a Model 14 or a Model 15 or a precursor of same (model numbers began around 1957). The usual 14 is a 6" barrel and the usual 15 is a 4" barrel.

Since yours is model marked it was easy to ID. The above info is for the next guy asking the same question.

M15

Jami, you have one of the finest 38 specials ever made. The K frame is/was an outstanding sized gun and the M15 is a dream to shoot. I have my fathers M15, no dash with some minor wearing of the muzzle and cylinder edges from his PD holster but thats it. I carry this pistola while hunting, hiking or ATVing. Great carry and light.

You have a keeper.
