SHTF from a new perspective

Now for something different. Lets pretend you are out with one of your firearms and it all goes south. The situtation is: you have one (yes, only one) firearm and have to bug out without the possiblity of obtaining any of your others.
The question is.....What firearm do you own that you wish you DO NOT have in your hands at that moment?
Mine would be my custom 10/22 b/c I have yet to install an aftermarket extractor to make extraction reliable with the vq. barrel. Also my hammer spring is getting light and it fails to fire occassionaly. Not my idea of fun in a SHTF situation.

My three-year old daughter's Chipmunk .22 rifle. No, she doesn't shoot it yet, but neither does she shoot all the other guns she "owns."

I know, this a rifle forum question, but I'm still going to answer with a pistol.

Easy answer, although I can thankfully think of no reason why I'd be carrying this and only this weapon. The culprit: my Lorcin .22 pistol. Yes, I own a Lorcin. My ex-wife is fully to blame for it, and I couldn't get her to agree to custody of it in the divorce.

The thing is totally unreliable. It'll fire everytime you pull the trigger with a live round in the chamber. The problem lies in getting that live round into the chamber. The extractor sucks, and fails very frequently. Only once in four years have I managed to put more than one full mag through it without an FTE. I was shocked when I fired 4 or 5 full amgs without one single malfunction. Given it's unreliability, I would never rely on a Lorcin to defend myself. Hence, I will never be caught carrying just it.

Now, as far as rifles go, I'd hate to be caught with nothing but my German Commission Model 1888. The thing is 113 years old, the barrel is pitted, and ammo is non-existent. One other I'd be reluctant to be limited to would be my Arisaka Type 99. Try finding ammo for that thing! Norma is the only manufacturer, and it costs $30-40 a box, so it's not something Wally World stocks.

Old navy enfield chambered in .308....

It would get the job done but I would hate to have to rely on that thing (hehe $40 gun, lol)

Great thread BTW.

Definately hate to be stuck with my 10/22 for the same reasons stated above. FTE 2-3 times per 10rnd mag.

I'll try to stick with rifles here, but a handgun pick is easier.

I would say that my old Remington pump .22 that I inherirted from my Grandpa. The old rifle means a lot to me, but if it was all I had, I would be choosing my shots and watching my step very carefully! Weak spings and worn parts aren't the greatest confidence builder.

I'd have to say my scoped Romanian 1969 trainer. It's a great rifle, very accurate and all, but it's a target gun. It's the only rifle I have that has optics with no backup iron sights. Plus with it's 6x scope, it's no good under 25 yards.

I just can't forsee a situation where I'd be out with just it by itself though. I always take rifles out in twos or threes and with at least one handgun.

Other than that one, I can count on all my other long guns.

My Garand, as the headspace is currently bad and it causes stuck cases. It is effectively a single-shot weapon that requires case extraction with a screwdriver, or worse, jamming the cleaning rod down the barrel. I would definitely be swearing about that should the SHTF.

If my Garand was functioning as intended, my least desirable rifle would be my Enfield #4, as it only cycles reliably with S&B brand ammo. All other ammo brands that I've tried have a high probability of being missed by the bolt on the closing stroke. Do this fast enough and you drop the hammer on an empty chamber. :D

If, then, I had plenty of S&B .303, the last choice would turn to my M1 Carbine, if only for it's relatively short range and power. I would not be crying in the least but considering the first two choices, it's on the bottom of the list.

I would just use home made grenades for hunting and SD.

Grenades with salt licks for deer..........

Grenades with peanut butter for squirrels..............

Grenades with dollar bills wrapped around them for politicians...........

Neither of them will shoot 6 inch groups at 20 ft. But being 1941 models, at least they have some experience with SHTF situations.

My Marlin 60. Like many others listed here, it's a .22lr. I'd try my hardest, though, to fight my way to my SAR-1.;)

My Bushie configured for varminting, heavy bull barrel, lead weight in butt, 6X24 scope. Pure deadweight (did I mention how heavy it is?) and not useful for anything closer than a 100 yards and unless it's sitting on it's bipod.

It'd be more useful as an anchor than as a weapon.

Hmmm

Probably my Mosin-Nagant M-44 Romanian clone. Not that it is a bad rifle, but not all that many places stock 7.62x54 ammo.

Most places that carry any rifle ammo will have .30-06 and .30/30, so I wouldn't feel too bad if I only had my US Rifle Cal .30 M1 or my Marlin Mdl 30A

My oddball Martini Cadet in .17/.357Mag.

Its death to Prairie Dogs at under 200 yards. But single shot, and no ammo availability, unless I have my relading bench and some time to be careful. And if something breaks, I'll die of old age before I run across another Martini Cadet.

I know I'd hate to be stuck with my target rifle. It's a Mauser action with a 26" heavy barrel, a bipod, an 8-32X44 scope, all stuck in a heavy adjustable stock. In the right hands, it'll dot the "i" in a federal arrest warrant at 600 yards, but the danged thing weighs in at 16 pounds! I think I'd rather have a sling and a bag of rocks!

M1A Scout. Every time I think I got the thing zeroed in, something else starts falling off. I think I got the bugs worked out, but I haven't rezero'd it since they sent me a new stock. (Do I need to?)

I think people may be reading this wrong. . .they're reading it as "what's the worst firearm that you own, that you would never want to be stuck with". . .moreso it should be "What firearm do you regularly shoot, that you would not want to be stuck with if the SHTF while you were out with it and JUST it?" (as unlikely it is, that any one of us would be out with just one gun) :D

Me? My dad's old .22LR bolt action single shot. It's as accurate as I can shoot, but shells quite frequently don't extract and must be pried out, it's slow to shoot even without that, anemic round even with Stingers, and limited ammo capacity (0+1).

Next to that, my .50 cal muzzleloader, only because it's slow to shoot, and needs to be cleaned when shooting long strings. Not anemic at all though. :)

Super 14 Contender in .30-30. It's accurate, reliable, and uses commonly available ammo. It is also fairly slow to reload, and combines many of the worst aspects of carrying a rifle with the worst aspects of carrying a pistol. It's an even more awkward package with mounted optics.

my Yugo Mauser in 8x57mm.

Not that it's not a great rifle, but I wouldn't likely have much ammo on hand when out shooting it, and getting ammo for it in a SHTF scenario would be pretty hard, to say the least.

Lets see, first and foremost , I don't want to be carrying that old Daisy model 95B lever action BB gun. Its hell on toothpicks at 25 ft, but I don't think I can work the lever fast enough to incapacitate a bad guy. It does have a 500 round magazine though :D

Hmm, I only have three guns, but I chose all of them for their practicality so there are no real SHTF-lemons among them.
Enfield - the best choice.
HK SL8 - not enough mags yet.
G17L with Bubits stock - would do ok in an urban scenario.

MAS 49/56 in 7.5 French; ammo is scarce, ten round mags that 'clip' on, etc.....

Cool gun just not my idea of somethign to have when the SHTF....

Then again it is at least better then nothing
