I know people under 16 in North Carolina don't need hunting licenses if they're hunting with someone with a license but do they still need their own tags? How do the hunting laws differ for adults and minors?

When i say hunting i mean deer.

And since I'm new to hunting can someone explain to me how tags work? I thought you just had to register the deer. I have no clue what tags are.

first things first....

dont quote me but i think NC requires you have a hunter safety education course. If you're new to hunting you need to take the course anyway. Its just good for buiness.

tags...... NC has called it the big game report card. before you move your kill you are supposed to "cut" your tag. Before you clean your animal you must register the kill. Easiest way to do that is call 1-800-IGO-TONE (1-800-446-8663) and follow the instructions.

All rules that apply to adults apply to you aswell.

The above is true. Under 16 doesn't require a license, but you must have a hunter's safety course before you can legally hunt. You must also obtain (for free at any place that sells hunting licenses) a big game harvest report card and must notch your "tag" prior to moving the animal from where it died. You may field dress the animal before doing anything else provided you do not remove the sex organs. You must then either call in to the number posted previously or you must go to www.ncwildlife.org to register your kill and get an authorization number within 24 hours and before the animal is actually processed. That authorization number must then be entered on your harvest report card where you notched it earlier.

I'm actually probably going to sign up for that class. It's at a very convenient location for me. You wouldn't happen to be teaching it would you?

Nope, I'm not teaching it. I'm in the piedmont triad area and teach in Alamance Co. I was just pointing you in the direction of one down your way.

The course is 10 hours total 9 hours instruction with an hour of testing time. Test is 50 questions 2 points each. 70 pct required for passing. Mostly common sense stuff if you even remotely pay attention to the instructor. You also have to demonstrate safe gun handling skills and this part is a simple up or down with the instructor having complete discretion to pass/fail you.

I see what you mean about the time. I'm sure that is 9am to 4pm on sat and 2-6 on sun.

Given that this course is at Blackwater they may have a live range component.

Instructors are encouraged to do this when possible but not everywhere we have to teach provides access to a shooting range.
