does anyone out there make a left-handed safety for the 870? a search of Brownells for "870 safety" gave me nothing.

Pokey, why don'tcha just operate the safety left-handed? I do, and it doesn't seem to be any particular burden. I don't think I'd change mine even if I could.

They are available, I recommend smith installation.

However, since I shoot LH sometimes, I just use my thumb to take it off and forefinger to put it on. Others have worked out different ways to do this. A bit of experimentation may net you a technique that works for you sans alterations.

I am left handed and at first wanted to get a left-handed safety. Now with practice, I am happy with the safety as is.

I got the safety on my 870 changed to left-handed, oversize.
Parts from Brownells, of course.
Simple.

I got a drop-in (no machining required) from TFL and THR member willp58. It works with the detent ball & spring in its original location by virtue of the detent holes being offset from, and machined separately from, the trigger-blocking part (instead of those areas being turned on a lathe in one operation). The only issue (not an issue at all, really) is that it has to be installed in a specific "clock" position and it won't rotate in place like the factory piece.

I conceived the idea for a safety like this independently, and was actually considering going to a local machinist with a sketch, until I heard from willp58. What he sent me was virtually identical to my idea. :cool:

About $25, IIRC.
