I was just wondering if any of you guys could put me in the direction of an article on building a 6.5x55 with a remingon 700 action, including the info on the whole process. I'd appreciate the leads..

Nope. But if you change the action to Savage, I can help.

Send a M700 standard long action to your smith, tell him to put on a high quality barrel of a suitable length and contour, and then put it in a McMillan stock. BTW, my 6.5x55 build consists of the following:

Winchester Classic action
28" AMU contour Obermeyer barrel
McMillan Prone stock
Speed Lock FP & spring
Jewell trigger
Williams one-piece steel TG & FP
Badger 20MOA base and rings

It's quite common to go around the smiths and send the action right to the barrel mfg. For instance Hart or Shilen will install their barrel on your action for around $300 to $400. THat includes squaring the action, lapping the bolt lugs etc. So basically they could install a match grade barrel and accurize your action for around $700 to $800. Get one in bead blasted stainless and you don't need to have anything reblued. Get an inletted stock of some kind and have a smith do the final fitting and a glass bed job.

It's hard for a gunsmith to compete with the barrel mfg. for price since Hart and Shilen install barrels and square receivers all day every day. Are you looking for a bench gun or hunting rifle?

Here's a small article on basic installation.

You will need a long action M700 to convert, otherwise you will be limited in bullets that can be used due to the magazine length. Unless you have some experience with tools and gauges, I would suggest having a reputable gunsmith make the conversion. Most can make it with the original barrel contour to match your old stock, should you choose to use it. Just choose one of the brand name barrel makers, depending on how much you want to spend.
