rebluing question...

I have an old WW2 pistol that is in excellent mechanical condition, but it retains about 10% finish, if that. In other words it's almost entirely patina and some odd discolorations. There is NO pitting at all, just essentially no finish. Can this pistol be chemically stripped and refinished without ANY polishing? I want to restore it to what it may have looked like when new, without removing any of the markings or machine/tool marks.
Yes I know it eliminates "collector value" but this has none. You would have to see it.
Thanks to all who reply.

Take it to a gunsmith and have it examined by a pro. He probably won't charge you for his opinion of the best way to go on the refinishing job.
You didn't mention the type pistol. What is it?

Yes.
There are several brands of rust and blue remover that will strip it back to bare steel. Then degrease and dip for a reasonable approximation of the original look.

Thanks for the replies. The pistol is a Mauser manufactured P.38 (byf44). Common as far as P.38s go, and as a collector of P.38s I am generally opposed to any type of refinish, but this one has suffered enough. I think it will make a nice display piece and casual shooter once done.

I should mention that Al did a great job on the P.38, and fast too. Thanks!

To strip and take the remainig bluing off, immerse it in vinegar for about 45 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with water, dry, then lube it quick or it will start to rust.

I just wanted to give an additional testimony to the high quality of Big Al Az's rebluing work. (See post #5) My S&W Model 13 looks like new. Maybe better.
Thanks Al! :)
