the security/service/speed-six are the same size as the S&W K-frame...as a matter of fact, hey can use the same speedloaders.
i think the speed-six with 2.75" barrel is an awesome CCW piece. the rounded contours just make it smoother. it is stronger, by design, than the K-frame but it takes a bit more knowledge to get a smooth DA trigger with it than the S&W

I find my 4" Speed Six to be nicely concealable. The factory spurless hammer, which I obtained and installed, helps in tight situations, such as under a shirt. As 9mmepiphany said, these Ruger double-action Sixes are comparable to the K-frame S&W in size, though I should add that the frame is just a bit deeper, so a really tight holster made for a K-frame may not accomodate a Ruger Six.
No Ruger double-action reveolver is as small as a Chief's SPecial, which is a J-frame. Even the SP101 is notable larger, like a Colt Detective Special in size.
Indeed, Ruger Sixes are not famous for being as smooth in the action as K-frame S&W sixguns, but I don't let that bother me, as long as they go "clackety-clack" instead of "clunkedy-clunk." An experienced, well-trained double-action shooter can shoot well enough with any DA sixgun that does not have major hitches in the git-along, er, I mean, burrs in the action parts.

I picked up my SS security six snub last year and it has become my primary CCW. I find it to be about the perfect size and weight for full bore .357 ammo. In the smaller J frame .357's the reduced power short barrel loads are prudent...but with the added 1/2 lb in weight it goes a LONG way in taming recoil.
The trigger on my Six MUST have been worked on by a previous owner since it is easily the equal of my P&R S&W N frames!

plus it has, as opposed to the 2.5" S&W, a full lenght ejector rod

Mine does real well in a Don Hume belt slider. I put a spurless hammer in and added Tyler-T-Grips. Works fairly well.:D

how well do you think my 13 year old son could handle a .357 im planning on letting him fire it some he's fired .38's and .380's and actually a .357 in the past but through a 6'' gp100 so he might not be able to handle it as well

Baldy,
Which Don Hume holster is it? Checked their web site - they don't list ANY products for Speed 6.
Anyone has other hoster recommendations for 2.75 in. Speed 6?

Mine works great in a shoulder rig or in a jacket pocket. It's not small enough to work in a pants pocket. It's perfectly fine for belt carry as well.
I find it to be about the perfect size and weight for full bore .357 ammo.
Big dittos on that. I think it's the finest concealable .357 mag ever made, bar none.

At the risk of sounding cheap and uninformed, I'll offer up my purchase of today. My 2 3/4" Speed Six needed a garage so, while at a local gunshow I spotted a new "Double Triple Trading" nylon holster #26TB for 14.00. The guy sold it to me for $9. and it fits beautifully and does it's job. Granted it's not the smallest or no doubt the greatest, but it works and has a metal re-inforced thumb break option too!.. The way this gun shoots, I'm sure a better product is in it's future, but for now I'm happy.

.380awesome-
If he can shoot the other guns, the .357 is a noticable step up. I guess the answer to the question, "can he?" is yes, he can. "Will he be able to?" is another question...
About the "softest" magnum rounds I have found is the Blazer aluminum. Some have issues with its aluminum cases; I do not.
If you're worried, step up to +P ammo, but I haven't found much thats reasonable "plinking" ammo. Get a box of each, magnum & +P, and let him try them. He might prefer one over the other.
And, he might surprise you.

.380awesome my wife will (occasionally) shoot doubletap's 125gr gold dot (1550fps/667lbs!) from my security six. When she carries the Six it is loaded with Speers short barrel reduced power .357.
I have found the Sile rubber grips (~$10) at CDNN are AWESOME at absorbing recoil. They also conceal very well since they are very flat.

Mike
hoptob,
I own a blue 2.75" Police Service-Six and I bought a DeSantis Speed Scabbard (http://www.desantisholster.com/002.html). It's the same holster you would buy for a 3" S&W K frame and it's extremely comfortable for all day carry. I bought several for my larger revolvers and at the local gun shop they can be had for between $42 and $45, not for the price of $62.50 on the site.
(sorry, I don't have any pictures of the rig right now but if you really want to see it just PM me and I'll take some pictures and post them)

Uh, so, how are you planning to conceal it (your original question) without a holster? Mexican carry? If so, then get a 4" barrel to give you a little more belt overlap.

so sorry 380.... back on track.... my blued Speed six is a shooters dream... heavy enough to absorb recoil and accurate enough to satisfy me. It shoots sub 3" groups all day @ 10yrds. (haven't tried further), but then a 2.75" barrel really wasn't meant to be a tack driver @ 50 yards. I will definitely be able to carry it concealed with the confidence I desire. It's no skinny featherweight by any stretch.. but it's definitely concealable and accurate.

.380awsome Trust me on this...a good holster and belt make ALL the difference in comfort and concealibility. Simply rugged sourdough pancakes are sooo good I occasionally use my 4" S&W 28-2 as a CCW in cold weather when I can get away with an untucked shirt!
You will have no problem carrying a Six all day long!

ArchAngel and WNY, thank you for the holster advice, guys. I lucked in this weekend and got 2.75" Speed 6 in a good condition for fair price. Awesome gun.
380, Speed 6 is much larger and heavier that the Chief but still looks very concealable. Here is a quick picture with M442, M640 and SP101 for comparison.

about the gun (as per your original post) they started production in 1972 with the 150 prefix. this continued until 1974 and in 1975 the 151 prefix started. 1977 marked the beginning of the post 151 prefix era. I mention this because grips for the 150 prefix guns will not fit later models, and later model grips will not fit the 150 prefix.
The rumor was that ruger stopped production of the six line in 1988 in favor of the GP line because the profit margin was slim on the sixes. I don't know how true that is. The sixes have a reputation for having a heavy trigger pull, but spring packs are available from wolfe.
the sixes are often considered an overlooked gem. Great guns that can often be had at very affordable prices, though lately prices on them have been climbing as more and more people are finding out about how good of a deal they are. Ruger will still service sixes as well.

It is a very heavy gun for every day carry IMO. I carried my Speed Six, for a while, but traded it for my Glock 19 which is lighter fully loaded than the Ruger is with only six rounds in it.

.380awesome, the above is a quote of your entire opening post, including title. The subject of concealability does indeed involve holsters. This is a discussion forum, where people exchange ideas, and threads take on lives of their own, as many take an interest, not just the one who started the threads. OK? Do not think I am scolding; just trying to be helpful.

In this case I really dont think we did. Concealibility of a firearm is dependent upon more than its size! Good holsters and good belts allow people to carry pistols unobtrusively.

The six series is very comfortable to carry even in the 4" with the right (affarid to say it) HOLSTER! My ruger is the same size as my handy S&W 66 and 19, in fact, I use the same leather and speed loaders. The Ruger sixes are wonderful revolvers and built like a tank while being easy to carry. If I could have only one revolver...my police service six would be on the short list if not the top of the list. They are also wonderfuly easy to field-strip and maintain.
p.s. not everyone in Virginia is grumpy tonight!

380,
I guess you just don't understand what some of us are saying. Concealability is connected to using a good holster. It's very hard to discuss how well a revolver will conceal without discussing good conceal holsters.
If you use a holster which does a poor job of concealing your revolver the revolver isn't concealable. You might want to check your attitude at the door...

In my own experience, for concealment and strength and accuracy, my SP101 was a better gun than my Security Six, more accurate even though the SP101 had a 2.25" barrel and the security six had a 4". To each his own, but it's just hard to beat an SP101 for carry of .357 magnums and shootability if you have to use it. That Security Six was a kicker, too. The SP101 was easier to shoot hot loads out of and had less muzzle climb. 140 hollowpoint magnums were sweet. I much prefer the grip frame of the SP101, too. It allows for more variety and concealability in grip shape. The Hogue for the SP101 is a sweet round butt shape that melts away under a T shirt in summer. The square butt Sixes, not so much, big lump especially if you have to squat down to pick something up. I'd like to get another SP101, this time in 3". I'd much rather buy a new SP101 than a used Six. YMMV

October 3, 2008, 03:27 PM
MCgunner, I too have noticed that the SP101 kicks less uncomfortably into the hand than my Speed Six. Shooting large quantities of magnums through either is not my cup of tea, but the SP101 seems to direct recoil more into the palm, wrist, and arm, rather than kicking upward; of course, the lower bore axis is a major reason for this. I am sure the grip fit to the hand is also important, and will of course vary with individuals.
I have wished for a longer-barreled .357 SP101; perhaps, if I can find a willing 'smith, I might try it someday with a custom barrel, or a take-off barrel that has been re-threaded. I have a take-off 6" Security Six barrel that is a candidate. Cut from the breech end, and re-threaded, that might make for a sweet 5" SP101.
Oh, and for the OP, this is a discussion forum, so I will discuss, if you please, and not limit myself to question-and-answer format.

hmmm ,what is your opinions on the sp-101(possibly in .327 magnum!)?
MCgunner
October 3, 2008, 05:27 PM
I love the SP101, but much, much prefer the .357 magnum caliber. The .327 is for girls. :neener: Okay, for the "recoil sensitive", 'cause I bet Sarah Palin could handle a .44 mag in an SP101. :D Seriously, though, why mess with .327 when the .357 is MUCH more caliber firing a heavier bullet with a lot more energy? Even out of a 2.25" barrel, I got 550 ft lbs from a 140 grain bullet and my 180 load clocked over 1300 fps/662 ft lbs. I wouldn't use that load for self defense, carried the 140, but I'm just sayin, can a .327 do that? HELL no, puny little bullet to boot. The 140 was not hard to shoot in the SP101, one reason I like the gun.
Yeah, the Six rode sort of high in the hand and had a lot of muzzle flip. To top that off, that pathetic grip HAD to come off it and I put a Hogue on it and it rode even higher in the hand. Damned thing hurt the web of my hand with hot loads, never liked that. Top that off, the SP101 conceals a lot better with its round butt profile hogue installed. The SP101 is a BIG step up from the sixes IMHO. It would make a nice trail gun if they'd offer an adjustable sight version, maybe a 4" barrel option. :D Smith does that with the M60, even a FIVE inch option. Ruger has never been know for variety of models and options, though. I've even considered having what I wanted built, but it'd be costly if I could find someone to do it. My very accurate Taurus 66 K frame sized gun works great for a trail gun for me, so I don't worry a lot about it. :D

The only thing I've noticed with the 4" Security Six is that, with heavy magnums, it "rings" like a bell in the hand. There's some sort of high-frequency resonance going on. Anyone who's ridden a 600cc sportbike at high RPMs for a while will know exactly what I'm trying to convey. Tingles the fingertips, it does.
The heavier 4" Trooper Mk III and 6" King Cobra don't do that.
Light bullets over lots of powder make this worse. Heavier bullets are better.
I found the 2 3/4" Speed Six very similar in shooting to the 4" Security Six. Great gun. I want one.

I was looking for a "6" when I found an Sp101 that I could trade into. Best trade I ever made! For me the SP in .357 magnum is the "bee's knees" when it comes to a CCW belt gun. Not that you care, but when carrying IWB I use a DM Bullard Dual Conceal Carry holster - OWB, a modified Desantis.
Hey .380 - Try the CAPS key every once in a while, it'll make your posts easier to read.
