2 1/2" blade folder for lefty suggestions

January 14, 2003, 06:51 PM
I'm looking for a slightly smaller knive than my EDC Small Sebenza for a southpaw. I volunteer at my kids' school several times a month and the laws prohibit my carrying a blade longer than 2 1/2". I have several smaller locking blades (autos), but none are suitable for carry on my school days as I carry lefty and they're not.

Any suggestions?

Look at one of the Kershaw Ken Onion models- the "assisted opening" makes them about as ambidextrous as they get.

Thanks, but I have one of them. The placement of the slide lock makes it difficult to use safely and quicky with my left hand. Tried carrying it unlocked once: almost sliced off a vital part of my anatomy when it opened as I sat down. :what:

Spyderco Native? I'm a lefty, don't like to be far from mine. For non-tactical I'm also liking the Swiss Army lockblade knife.

Take a look at two Spyderco models.

The first is the Meerkat with a 1 15/16" blade in AUS-6.

The second is the Salsa, which has a 2 7/16" blade in AUS-8 (aluminum scales). It also comes in a Titanium-scaled version with ATS-34 steel.

Both have revesible clips so you can go "lefty."

If it were me, I'd go for the Titanium Salsa. Perfect blade length and a cool knife with Spyderco's new compression lock. Runs around $100.

Thanks Guyon. I'd already picked up a Salsa. Spyderco redesigned the grip and the clip is no longer reversable. So back it goes.

Bummer. I don't own one, but it looks like a nice little knife.

I know the SS Dragonfly isn't reversible. I can't recall about the CoPilot, but it's another of their small versions.

Another option, if you're willing to carry deep pocket, is a fancy slipjoint with some good steel and nice handles (maybe stag bone). Hen and Rooster comes to mind here. I've been looking at the Queen line of knives in D2 steel and have heard favorable things on Bladeforums about their heat treat of D2.

Yeah. Become a righty like everyone else.:)

Take a look at the Al Mar Ultralight series. They make three sizes, the thumb stud is ambidextrous and the pocket clip can be reversed for left side carry.

Penman, those look like neat knives, but even the smallest size (the Hawk series) comes in at 2 3/4". Larry needs something under 2 1/2".

Yes, they do look very nice, but the law states that I can't carry a blade longer than 2 1/2" when I work at my kid's school. A Ken Onion from Kershaw is probably the way I'll go. Its a nice knife, but its a long way from my Small Sebenza EDC.

And based on Ol' Badger's recommendation, I'll be using it to cut off my left arm so I can become a righty. :neener:

Didn't check the blade length on the littlest one, thought it would fit. Good luck.

I have often suspected that my basic insanity was caused by the school system's efforts to make me right handed- impossible for someone like me. Shooting is hardly a southpaw's sport but there are a lot of us in it anyhow- basic contrary nature I guess.
