ok so i went to my local gander mountain today and they had a military model winchester 12 in pretty descent shape (hopefully itll be there when i come back with cash) but clamped to the end of the barrel was a wierd looking item im not too sure about it looks like a compensator or a standoff breaching device but heres the thing the vents are on the sides so i doubt its a comp and i highly doubt they had standoffs in that time frame (as i understand a standoff is a new thing i may be wrong tho) but its wierd maybe a muzzle break??? its larger diameter than the barrel then has a funnel like taper back down to the bore size with large vertical slashes (holding the gun lateraly) on the sides anyone have a clue what it is? and it looks like its about as old as the gun which has military stamping so i can only assume its old enough to be at least a pre 60s firearm

Someone probably added a standoff style muzzlebreak

How about a duckbill (http://www.jouster.com/cgi-bin/milshotgun/shotgun.pl?noframes;read=13182)? Intended to disperse shot, probably buckshot, in the plane of the two "vents." I saw a few of them during the Viet Nam War era but have not seen their effect. I understand they were not well liked as they spread the pattern too well.

the funnel shape isnt like a blunderbus its more like a taper in than out im assuming a duckbill tapers out? ive never seen one so i dont know

if i end up with the gun ill take a pic but ill have to pattern it to see if the muzzle thing does anything for it

Could be the Deluxe model Polychoke. These were an adjustable choke and a common aftermarket addon.

Same for the Cutts Compensator. These used screw on, external tubes.

Both had vents and turned recoil into noise. The Cutts especially.

Pics would be a big help.

Sounds like a Lyman Cutts Compensator to me:

They were very popular in the model 12's day.

Various choke tubes were available, and the "Spreader" tube would look more like a blunderbuss front end.

Lyman discontinued production of them in Jan this year. Some tubes & other stuff are still available from Brownell's as long as they last.
