i am looking for a new scope for my 300 win mag. the scope i have is a great scope, but my eyes need more power. so i am looking at several different ones, and this 30MM tube keeps popping up. what is the benifit of a 30 mm tube over the traditional 1" (25.4MM). i will have to buy new rings anyway so that does not matter.

Moose,
Like you I am finding a need for brighter optics as I age. I went to a 1" Zeiss 5x15x42 on my 3OO Win mag & a Cabellas Premium Guide 1" 6x20x40 AO on my 300 Win Short mag.The Premium Guide Scopes are a great scope for the money.

Moose 102--I hear you! My own eyes are long past their peak efficiency, and things that used to be nice and sharp seem to have become more and more fuzzy as time passes. the scope i have is a great scope, but my eyes need more power.May I respectfully suggest that you don't need more "power," i. e. magnification--What you want more of is clarity. What sort of 'scope are you now using--knowing this I think we can comment more wisely on what sort of upgrade might be apropos. Also, how much $$ do you have available for this upgrade?

30 mm tubes offer more room for windage and elevation adjustment...some claim more light transmission but I don't buy it, because I've never noticed it.
To get good glass it will cost a few $$$...but QUALITY glass is what makes for a clear bright image.
I recommend the Leupold XV-III's, or the Mark 2 6-18x40 (I have that scope....LOVE IT)
Hope that helped

A 30mm tube certainly will allow more light through than a 1" tube given identical internal finish and optics. The differences between the two levels, though, are very small and essentially unnoticable.
What is more critical is optical quality. A scope with a 1" tube and very good glass will always beat out a 25mm, 30mm, 32mm, 34mm, 35mm, 40mm, etc. tube with very poor optics.

right now, i have a redfeild tracker 3-9x44. when i look through either of my 4-12's (one is a bushnell, and the other is a simmons) i can see much better, so that is what i am basing this on. the bushnell is an adjustable objective scope, which i have mixed feelings about. for target shooting, it is great. but i dont want to be fiddling around trying to adjust the scope when a 12 point walks out of thick cover @ 30 yards. of course at 30 yards, the 3-9 works great, but out at and beyond 100, i really like the extra magnification.
