Remington Model 41 serial number

I just received a .22 Remington Model 41 Targetmaster rifle as evidence in a felony case. We can not locate a serial number. Is that typical for this model?

Remington says they were serial numbered, but they don't say where on the gun.
My only Remington .22 is a 513, numbered on the bottom of the barrel just ahead of the foreend tip.

And just ahead of the forend tip is exactly where I found it - 124xxx - so faint, I never would have otherwise discovered it. THANK YOU!
