I "need" a Saiga 12 ga. I think...

Ok, Ok, I'm 58, I have 11 shotguns, but this one just calls to me and with the impending election that very likely won't go our way, I'm thinking that the opportunity may go away in about 3 months. It seems that I can get one for about $600.00. That will delay my acquisition of a Glock 29, but you know, priorities.

Any opinions? Heh, heh.

I have three, and that won't be the end. I love them times ten. Go for it, and get plenty of magazines.

I have 1 with 2 on layaway. I love mine even though mine is a basic conversion with no real upgrades at this time.

Love mine.. basic layout +10 round mags. No reason to change anything on it, it works fine. Pistolgrip isn't worth the extra cash imho.

Oh you don't know what you are missing. The Saiga 12 was designed with a particular balance in mind (the AK style layout). Having the extended sporter stock with the trigger location abortion totally messes up the balance of the gun.

Holding an unconverted Saiga 12 compared to a mossberg 500 (sporter style) is a mind opener. The Saiga feels so unbalanced and awkward compared to the Mossberg.

But you convert it and all of the natural balance of the AK comes back.

The difference in stock length is huge. When I held my unconverted Saiga, my left hand (on the handguard) felt like I was reaching WAYY out there.

Now that I have converted mine, I could never go back.

Just do it. There are no substitutions.

Snarlington,
I finally got mine at the Dallas Market Hall show two weekends ago. I had been looking for the longest time at the shows but nothing. Then all of a sudden many vendors had them. I bought mine on Saturday for $549.95 and then the price went up to $599.95 on Sunday! I should have bought two but there was a sweet HK P7 available and I had to have it. The conversion will come later and then optics like an Aimpoint T-1 or H-1.

Anybody got a good place to pick up a baseline model with pistol grip? I'm not sure which version I should get. I want to get one of these just so I have one in case the political climate goes south come November, but can't afford to get all the bells and whistles (the Tromix work-over) right now. I just want to make sure the one I get is easily modified later on.

You will have to convert a base model yourself then. Around 200 dollars or so in various parts if you have to buy everything.

You can't buy off the shelf pistol grip Saigas, all of the pistol grip saigas are conversions one way or another. It just all depends on who does the conversions (yourself is cheapest and then goes upwards).

Get one and get it now.

They're going to do nothing but go up in price.

Will the unconverted (standard) models accept 8 or 10-round magazines?

Yes.

PT92, thanks for the quick reply. Good to know that even if I can't afford the conversion right away, I can still at least use the 10-rounders in it!

Congrats on your purchase FSCJedi. You are going to love that shotgun. Now you need some 10 round stick mags and a MD-20 round drum or 2. :)

Are you going to have the trigger and trigger gaurd moved forward like the AK-47 ala "converted" ? I'm picking mine up from the gunsmith tomorrow.

Have fun with that shotgun. :)

Oh yes, I'm going to have it converted. I just can't afford to do it right now. When I can, though, I'm sending it to TROMIX.

I don't think TROMIX is accepting anymore work. He is still trying to fulfill previous work orders. He is completely swamped. I too would like to have a basic conversion done but I don't feel comfortable sending my shotgun to Hawaii.
Best luck though on your purchase and subsequent conversion.

Yeah, I read on his site that his wait list is currently full, however, like I said above, I can't afford to have the conversion done now anyway. It'll be a while (maybe six months to a year) before I will probably send it. I may go ahead and buy a Shark Brake from him, though, since it will fit on the IZ-109's threaded barrel.

Hawaii? His address is Oklahoma.

Tromix is considered the best, of that there is no doubt. I even have a couple saigas he did for me. But, just so's you all know-
Correia and crew over at FBMG are doing conversions as well. No where near the wait time of Tromix, and it is high quality work. The'll be doing a couple conversions for me shortly.

I'm picking mine up at Cadiz Gun Works in Cadiz, Ohio tomorrow. I waited less than 60 days and that was with a 1 week power outage from the BIG storms a few weeks back. I'm real happy with that.

LOL Trust me, if you hold one of the unconverted Saigas and compare the balance and feel of it to a standard converted Saiga (no SBS or anything crazy), you can tell the big difference.

well, you'll have to cut the barrel down to 12", install a compensator, a FAL grip, collapsible stock, modify the firing group to allow full auto as well as semi, pop an ACOG on it, and install a 40mm grenade launcher under the barrel. don't forget the 20-round drum mags.

you could call it... Abomination.

Erik, I think that is a damn fine idea. I know a guy who did something like that, only he used an EOTech. Kills the crap out of undead. :p

For you guys that are interested, I've got 9 Saiga 12s unclaimed on a shipment that is coming in first part of next week. $600 each.

600 bux? Whew. I'm glad I just bought 2 more about a month ago for 489 a piece (that dealer is completely out of stock at this time, a local non-internet dealer).

They sure aren't getting any cheaper!!

Just a brief update. I borrowed a buddy's Canon 580 flash unit for a photo shoot. Dropped and busted it. $400.00 to replace it. By By Saiga (for awhile).

Now you need some 10 round stick mags and a MD-20 round drum or 2.
Isn't it illegal to use magazines with greater than 10-round capacity if they don't have a certain number of U.S. made parts?

bobotech
October 24, 2008, 02:05 AM
Yup it is!!!

That is why you replace the stock, pistol grip, trigger group, and gas piston.

That gives you 6 parts and makes you legal.

Actually the aftermarket mags give you 3 additional parts as well so you would be well over the limit with only a trigger group change.

The aftermarket mags give you 3 US parts.
